Why Kubrick chose Hayden; When it came to his first major film, THE KILLING, he wanted & needed a theater draw - despite it costing over 25% of the movie's bud...get - but more importantly, Stanley wanted someone with what is known in military theory as 'command - control'. Admiring Sterling's performance in 1950's ASPHALT JUNGLE, and having done reading on how people take and hold control, plus being impressed with Hayden's Marine Corps, SOE & OSS background . . . being both physically and psychologically intimidating. . . he was thrilled to get him. Stanley personally phoned Sterling in 1962 and let him know that he wanted him to play Gen. Ripper in STRANGELOVE. . . he came close to declining, but took it on . . . the rest is history. See more
