HOW TO RESTORE YOUR GREYING FENCE (OR DECK) FOR A NATURAL LOOK If you’re like us, your fence has probably turned abysmal with years of neglect by being bare and unprotected. I'm sure you are starting to see the effects of weathering on this wood; greying and discolouration can become quite the eye sore to your home. The cost of replacing wood is much higher than the cost of protecting it every few years, as bare wood is at the risk of breaking down at a much more exponential ...rate than it is when protected by a stain. The infamous tactic most home owners employ to combat greying is with pressure washing. Often this technique can be effective to clean wooden surfaces, however it has also been shown to overly soften wood and reduce its lifespan significantly. Moreover, if used with too much jet pressure or too close to the surface, it can break down your wood and cause splinters to come to the surface. One way we like to tackle this problem is by using a brightening and restoring solution, and then protecting the wood afterwards with a quality stain. We scrub this cleaning solution onto the woods surface, let it sit until the desired result appears, wash it off, and then liberally coat with stain. By brightening and restoring the wood, it not only improves stain penetration by opening the woods pores but it also helps to prolong the life of your deck by removing stains from mold, mildew and algae - which will further break down your wood over time. After applying the solution, we then wash off the remainder with a low pressure hose and then let the deck dry. Make sure to sand away any imperfections for a smoother finish. Once the deck is fully dry is when the deck is ready to accept the stain: water and oil don’t mix and damp wood could repel the stain. By waiting to dry, the stain can fully penetrate and soak into the wood. Remember to reapply your semi-transparent stain to any faded spots (typically knots) to ensure a balanced finish. There you have it, enjoy your renewed deck or fence! Product: Cleaning - PWF All Purpose Deck Wash by Dulux Stain - Professional Wood Finishes Semi-Transparent Acrylic/Oil Stain by Dulux

As painstaking as it may be, a cleaned deck is well worth the effort, even if it takes quite a few hours. Now that you...r wood is clean, it does also mean that it is vulnerable to dirt accumulation and rotting again, and so a good stain is recommended to preserve the longevity of the deck.
