Last night, we had our first Teacher Bargaining Unit Council Meeting of the school year, and our council of Branch Presidents & the TBU Executive passed the following motion. Our members are encouraged to stay tuned in the coming days for information about the appointment process for the time-release positions of Dismantling Anti-Black Racism Training Officer, Racism Reporting Officer, and Anti-Racism Intersectional Officer.

We have been seeing a lot of online discussion about high school students without timetables. The reality is that community schools are having to completely redo many timetables because of cancelled classes. Here's a brief look at what is happening at many school boards.

Peel has the most new infections per day of any region in Ontario. Sadly, this is the first of many foreseeable cases in schools once we fully reopen as the For...dNation government has failed to ensure that a plan exists for a #SafeSeptember. We need reduced class sizes that will ensure physical distancing in all schools. Public Health recommends a minimum of 2 metres between everyone at all times. Schools are struggling to even achieve 1 metre in many cases. We need improved ventilation systems (work that should have been done months ago). We need teachers and education workers to be tied to one cohort of students rather than moving back and forth between groups, exposing them and students to hundreds of people every week. The list goes on. From ensuring adequate PPE for everyone, to providing paper towel for drying hands in washrooms rather than blowing air all over the room with a hand dryer. We are not even close to reopening schools in a safe way next week, and nobody should have to get sick or die because we have a provincial government that just wants to reduce spending and cut costs at any expense.

Our TBU executive sent the attached letter to the Peel District School Board Supervisor and Interim Director this week regarding the School Resource Officer (SRO) program.
