More information on the event series can be found here: www.sapiens.org/futures. The Fire this Time: Black and Indigenous Ecologies March 3, 2021 from 4-6 pm EST Register here: https://bit.ly/3dQRDnQ Moderated by Dr. Peter Nelson (Coast Miwok and citizen of the Federated Indians of Graton Rancheria) Panelists: Dr. Isabel Rivera-Collazo, Dr. Kristina Douglass, Dr. Justin Hosbey, and Jerrel Singer (Diné) In the past year, the world witnessed devastating fire seasons in Australia and the U.S. West, an Atlantic hurricane season with a record thirty storms, and a global pandemic. In each of these cases, among the losses of many, marginalized communities have borne the brunt of cascading environmental catastrophes, experiencing loss of lands and significant costs to community health and wellness. This panel, composed of leading Black and Indigenous archaeologists and artists, considers what it means to confront the challenges of a changing climate alongside the legacies of environmental racism. How does our understanding of past and present ecologies allow us to imagine new ethics of care and responsibility for all of our relations? And what shared obligations do such ethics create for archaeological practice?

The Plague Stone in Penrith Sitting incongruously beside the main road is this little noticed and unloved stone. But the story it tells is as fascinating as it... is sad. In 1597 the Plague struck in Penrith. Normal life in the town was suspended as the disease tore through the population. Farmers living around Penrith were too terrified of the plague to risk bringing their goods to market. So there were serious food shortages to compound the townsfolks’ problems. So plague stones were set up around the outskirts of the town. These stones had a hollow filled with vinegar. Townsfolk left coins in the vinegar and retreated a safe distance. Farmers then brought food and left it by the stone and took the money. The plague finally released its grip after 15 months having killed almost half of the population of the town. Such plague stones were quite common around England but few now remain. See more

With each Symposium, we hold a contest for the best overall student paper and best overall student poster prepared by an undergraduate or Masters student. Four ...members of the OAS board of directors marked the student entries and then met to compare notes to choose the winner. This award is a great accomplishment since there were many other top notch presentations but unfortunately, there can be only one winner for each category. The winner for the best overall student paper is: Using Legacy Collections at University of Toronto Mississauga for Undergraduate Research Vella, Yasmine, and Smith, David G. The winner for the best overall student poster is: The Schreiber Wood Project: Life at a Glance as Seen through Ceramics Baguio, Mahalia, Cinda Johnson, Sarah Ranlett, Michael Brand, and Trevor J. Orchard (Undergrad) Congratulations, everyone on this great achievement and thank you to all the student who participated and helped with our first ever digital symposium!
