Today is the last day of National Infection Control Week! Steph is the newest addition to the team of Birth Centre Aides. She is wearing mask and goggles as is required by all health care providers in the facility during the COVID pandemic. When you are here you will see our BCA’s and midwives wearing both a mask and goggles to protect themselves from infection and decrease the risk of transmission to our clients, visitors and their families. Steph is standing in front of one of the many posters that are up to remind everyone visiting the birth centre to wear a mask. To protect our staff and others using the facility we do require all visitors to wear a mask whenever they are in the Birth Centre. Stay safe this weekend everyone! #ipac #nicw #BEYONDTHEHORIZON IPAC Canada Ontario Midwives

Let's talk equipment! Here is our BCA Sarah in our equipment room. All equipment and surfaces undergo a two step process. First is cleaning which is the removal of microorganisms and debris from a surface or object using friction and a cleaning agent. The next step is disinfecting which is a process that is used to kill disease-causing microorganisms. The routine and effective cleaning and disinfection of surfaces, items, and equipment is an essential activity performed by our BCAs that protects clients, staff, and visitors to our centre! Did you have a favourite piece of equipment for your labour? Or are you looking forward to trying something out for your time here? #ipac #Nicw #BEYONDTHEHORIZON IPAC Canada

We're half way through National Infection Control Week! Our Clinical Lead Midwife, Suzanne, is holding our brand new birth stool. This stool is one piece of hard plastic and it's easier to clean and disinfect than some of the previous stools we've had. This stool can be helpful in labour because when a labouring client sits on it, their legs are flexed making more room in the pelvis. The client's upright position on the stool also helps use gravity to promote downward movement of the baby. Did you know that Suzanne is the only midwife in Canada who is Certified in Infection Control with the Board of Certification in Infection Control and Epidemiology (CIBC)? Do you have any questions for our 'Queen of Clean' about our infection prevention and control procedures ? We'd love to hear them! #ipac #nicw #cibc

Ottawa Birth and Wellness Centre 24.09.2020

Today, for National Infection Control Week, we're talking about tubs! The birth tubs are incredibly popular in our centre - 70% of clients use the tubs for pain relief in labour and 30% of clients give birth in the tubs. For this reason, we have rigorous cleaning and disinfection procedures after each admission. This is Ayla, one of the Birth Centre Aides, performing a tub clean. Notice the time on the clock! BCAs clean birth rooms no matter the time of day (or night)! #ipac #Nicw IPAC Canada Ontario Midwives

October 19th to 23rd is National Infection Control Week. This week originated to highlight infection control efforts in health care facilities and the community. This week, we will focus on the invisible but essential work our staff at the Ottawa Birth and Wellness Centre do everyday to create a safe environment for you, our clients. Let's talk about terminal cleans! When you leave a room after a birth, every surface and every item is cleaned and disinfected by the Birth Ce...ntre Aide. If an item can’t be cleaned and disinfected, it is thrown out. A terminal clean is a thorough clean and disinfection to prepare the room for the next client with the goal of protecting you and your family from infection. This is Erica, our Head Birth Centre Aide, cleaning, inspecting, and disinfecting every single item from the armoire where our clinical supplies and equipment are kept. Tune in throughout the week for more sneak peaks into our infection control procedures! #NICW #IPAC #BEYONDTHEHORIZON IPAC Canada Ontario Midwives

Please consider sharing your voice by completing this survey! https://respcct.ca/ ________________________________________________________________... Very little is known about how people experience care during pregnancy and childbirth across Canada, especially among people with various identities, circumstances and backgrounds. Differences in experiences and outcomes across communities may be linked to access to care, their individual health status, and/or how they are treated. We do not know for sure, and there is very little research that has asked community members to decide on what is most important to study and understand. In the RESPCCT study, a diverse group of people who had recent pregnancy experiences created or chose the questions to ask. They worked with researchers and community-based organizations to develop this survey, and to reach people across Canada who want to tell their stories of pregnancy and childbearing. Information gathered in the surveys will be used to improve childbearing care for all types of communities.

We are hearing a lot about what it means to be an essential worker in these COVID-times. Our Birth Centre Aide team is often referred to as the heart of our organization, but in the last months, the pandemic has put into perfect clarity just how critical they are. Quite simply, we would not be open without them. The ONLY reason we can continue to offer service to families who desire an out of hospital birth is because of our BCAs. To our BCAs we say this: Thank you. Thank yo...u for the long days and the longer nights. Thank you for the sweat. For the tears. For the cracked hands. For the sore ears. Thank you for the hours spent away from your families. Thank you for keeping our midwives and clients safe and healthy. Thank you for everything that you do. Please send our BCAs some love for the incredibly demanding work that they do every single day. Sadly some of our BCAs are missing from this picture, but let's send them some love too until we can take a new one together! #frontlineworkers

Today, we're asking people to recognize the midwife who supported them through birth! Heres how: #IThank{NAMEYOURMIDWIFE} #Midwives2020 & #IDM2020
