Five on the Fly! Fly fishermen are people who like to take something that's already difficult and do it in the most difficult way possible. So, naturally, the ...'IT' fish in the fly fishing world these days is a musky. Every year we host more and more fly fishers from as far away as California. They are the most challenging guests we can have because extreme boat control is the key to their success and constant attention to boat direction to allow for perfect casts wears you down. Throwing big flies is even more exhausting and it comes down to technique. Lesser fly fishers struggle and I spend my day hiding behind my windshield. Great fly casters are the most highly skilled artists we have in the fishing world and watching them is like watching a performance. This past week Peter Levick and I hosted the Robert and David Vezendy. They are two of the best fly makers and throwers in the musky world. They are uber-pattionate pioneers who do things that no one else does and achieve results like no others as well. The post-flood Ottawa River is far from normal this spring and conditions have been challenging for fishers of all species. While I was only able to wave at a few muskies with Bob and Dave, Peter was on fish in a big way and boated FIVE on the fly over a couple of days. A remarkable score anytime in musky fishing but considering the conditions it is a true testament to the learning Peter and the rest of us have done in recent years. And this was just another chapter in a book of knowledge about muskies on the fly that so many people are writing for themselves these days. Thanks Bob and Dave. We are smarter and better for having spent time with you. Can't wait until next time. John A ps A bold prediction - David Vezendy will catch a world record musky on a fly. I'm not sure he will tell us about it though....
