Be Water Smart in summer, and winter! Every #WaterWednesday this month we’ll be debunking ice myths with their cold realities. The myth: Thick ice is stronger than thin ice. The reality: Even thick ice may be weak if it is "rotten" or contains layers of water. Rotten ice has frozen and thawed repeatedly, making it potentially fragile even when it appears solid. When checking for proper ice thickness - illustrated in the image below - make sure the ice is new and clear. ... #WaterSafety #DrowningPrevention See more

Did you know approximately 35% of drownings in Canada occur from October to April when most people have no intention of going into the water? If you enter the water unexpectedly: Take a minute. The initial effects of cold-water pass in less than a minute so don't try to swim straight away. ... Relax and float on your back to catch your breath. Try to get hold of something that will help you float. Keep calm then call for help or swim for safety if you're able. #WaterWednesday #DrowningPrevention #WaterSafety

Did you know that the sights and sounds of water are good for your soul? Being close to water floods our brain with feel-good hormones and it increases our ability to focus. Also, our brains prefer the colour blue above all others. Try listening to or visualizing water next time you meditate after a long and difficult day. #WaterWednesday #MindBodyAndSoul #WeMissYou

Looking to expand your holiday treat repertoire? Found by the Education and Interpretation Officer at Pinhey's Point Historic Site, this heritage recipe comes from a Mrs. McMaster in The Home Cook Book, first published in 1877. Original Traditional Boiled Pudding 1.5 cups of flour 1 cup of sugar ... 1 cup of suet 1 cup of raisins 1 cup of currants 1 cup of potatoes, grated 1 cup of carrots, grated 1 teaspoon of [baking] soda Steam or boil for three hours. Looking to spice up this old recipe? We suggest .75 tsp each of cloves, allspice and cinnamon. We also swapped out the suet for butter, using the same measurements. Will you try this recipe for the holiday season? #MuseumMonday #MindBodyAndSoul #MyOttawa
