What better way to cap off 2020 than by handing out our Most Spirited Team Award?! This year has been nothing short of unusual and we are excited to announce that we had not one but TWO teams tie for the top spot a first in OCUA history! Congrats to Flightans and Spin City, we'll be popping some bubbly in your honour this evening

OCUA (Ottawa Carleton Ultimate Association) 24.12.2020

We're taking the time this holiday season to announce and celebrate this year's recipient of our Volunteer of the Year award ... Yvette MacAbuag! With no gala or audience, we'd like you to join us in giving her a huge round of virtual applause! Yvette, thank you for your dedication and hard work you've helped to make 2020 a little easier to get through.

OCUA (Ottawa Carleton Ultimate Association) 19.12.2020

We are definitely regretting not putting in those extra reps pre-holiday feasts like the ladies from our Womxn’s training pods did #OttawaUltimate

How lucky are we to be able to play indoor sports again in Ottawa? SO LUCKY! With that, let's show off our SOTG by working together to ensure all athletes have the safest experience possible The new guidelines and COVID protocols aren't that complicated but every time each individual avoids a small level of exposure, the whole community benefits! So, please remember to: ... - Fill out a pre-screening questionnaire the day of your league - Wear a mask whenever you are not actively playing (ie. when you enter / when you leave) - Have fun on the field, but keep the extra-curricular socializing to outside the dome (with your mask on and keeping a 2m distance!) Have you considered doing a post-game bevy and recap online?! - Maintain a 1m mark and keep stall counts silent - Avoid fouls even more so than before! - Carpooling is not encouraged during these times. Now enjoy this clip of socially distanced Ultimate done right!

Some bittersweet news for you all today last weekend at our Board retreat, Heather Wallace stepped down from her role as Board President/Chair. As our Executive Director said: "Heather brings with her an energy and work ethic that few can match. Her drive, ambition, and effectiveness as Board Chair over the last 2-3 years will be sorely missed by the organization. It’s been a pleasure working together. I appreciate the challenges we overcame, the opportunities we jumped on, ...and the overall path that’s been laid out for OCUA. Good luck on your future endeavours, Heather, I know you’ll do great!" With that, Heather also wanted to share a few words with you all: "I’ve loved my time as Chair with OCUA. It’s been a great opportunity for me to apply the skills and experience I have garnered professionally as a management consultant, while also teaching me so much about what it means to run a smaller organization and, more importantly, help build and contribute to a vibrant and passionate community. Recently, someone asked me what I was most proud of in my time as Chair. I thought about the HR policies I wrote, the performance management system I modernized, and the visually pleasing tones and fonts of our new PowerPoint template. But I realized what has meant the most to me is how this community has come together to support our league, each other and the sport we love during this pandemic. COVID-19 has shown me OCUA is bigger than our staff and our leagues, it’s even bigger than the frisbee we play, and I am honoured to be a part of that; I hope to be a part of it long after I retire from the Board. For now, I’m excited to have a little more time to focus on my own growing small business, building Ottawa’s mixed ultimate program and exploring my new-found ability to run more kilometres than I believe to be reasonable in one outing. See you all on the field!" Heather, we are so grateful for your dedication to not only OCUA but to the sport of Ultimate in general. We look forward to taking the fields with you again soon

OCUA (Ottawa Carleton Ultimate Association) 09.11.2020

It was a festive week at Parity and three particular bright lights really lit up the fields! Holding the record for most Parity seasons a whopping 11! Charlie (who you may know as David Townsend) showed off all that experience with 7 assists, 7 second-assists and only 1 throwaway! Looks like playing with Ol'Reliable really has its advantages! Lucy (aka Mel Jess) quarterbacked her offence with 7 second-assists and not a single turnover, while Linus (formerly known as Coli...n Scarffe) sped his way across the fields to put up 8 goals! Congrats

Good morning and happy Monday, folks! We're turning to our fine membership for some help today and as you can see, OCUA's website and tech stack are getting a little dated. With Drupal ending its service by December 2021, newly elected board member Sarah McDonald will be heading a new Tech Committee to oversee and build a new OCUA website So, any techies out there willing to lend a helping hand? We want to know what's out there so that we can provide great UX to our members for years to come. Interested? Email us at [email protected]! Know someone who fits the bill? Tag them in the comments below! Thank you 01110100

It was another big-hit week for Parity and this star-studded group really broke off from the mainstream to outperform the rest! Congratulations to Hugh Podmore who scored a massive $291,000 night that included 8 D-blocks Frontrunner Katelyn Fontaine led the league with 9 goals this week and league newcomer Brian Perry put up 11 assists! Talk about Boulevard of Broken RECORDS!!!

It's time for the announcement a lot of you have been waiting for! As you likely already know, the province recently announced a new COVID framework that sets Ottawa into the orange zone, allowing team sports to continue. So, what does this mean for winter Ultimate? Well, games and leagues are a GO! OCUA will provide full cash refunds should we have to cancel any games, and members receive 10% off their registration fee by signing up for all three winter sessions! Wint...er league registrations have been extended until November 12th. Leagues/divisions have been capped at a maximum of 50 players so spots will be limited (but there is still some availability as of this morning in most leagues) There is only ONE TEAM entry left, in the Wednesday evening Carleton 5v5 league. Grab it asap and help the other teams avoid a bye We are also very excited to announce that we will be offering socially distant training pods (following RED zone safety measures) of up to 10 people! Pod options will include u13 and u15 development pods beginning next week, as well as a u17 development pod, Womxn's, and Open pods starting the following week. Details coming soon! For now, you can find all our Winter League registration information here https://www.ocua.ca/Adult-Winter

Once every generation, a supergroup comes along that shatters records and redefines standards. This much is true for this week's three Parity Stars Owen Lumley: with $328,000.00 this was the highest salary game in the history of Parity League (we checked!) Samuel Tremblay-Larochelle: his 69 completions set the all-time Parity single-game record... and he did it with zero throwaways!... Alisha Zhao: the all-time winningest Parity player (with 3 championships) returned to fine form with 4 goals and 12 assists There's NO DOUBT that this has been quite an impressive week!

OCUA (Ottawa Carleton Ultimate Association) 23.08.2020

With only a few days left in this 28-day phase 2 lockdown, OCUA has been hard at work getting Winter Leagues up and ready to go as soon as we receive the green light. However, we realize that the current situation is ever-evolving so we’ve also made some contingency plans that may be of interest to you! Did you know that the province/OPH has provided an exception to domes that allows them to host the minimum internal number (ie. 10 right now) per mini-field?! If gyms remain c...losed and group sports remain on-hold, OCUA will be offering pod training to its members so that you can enjoy doing some fitness and drills in an open, safe space! Stay tuned for all the details in the coming days as we find out more. For the curious, we have been informed that domes were given this particular exemption because the air that you breathe inside the dome is changed every 20-50 minutes and the total air within the dome is changed every 3-6 hours. The latter is new air from outside, not re-circulated air, which is heated and blown in from the vents. This helps the dome maintain its structure and the difference in time is based on how windy it is outside and how much air pressure needs to be put into the dome. If you’d like more information about this, please don’t hesitate to send us a message!

It's that time again a time to celebrate the three brightest Parity Stars from week to week Lance, Travis, and Monica outshone the rest in Week 2 to truly catapult themselves into stardom. As the group's lead, Lance Blackstock delivered a stellar performance with 4 goals, 12 assists, 5 2nd-assists, 3 D-blocks, 33 catches and 44 completions! That said, you definitely can't ignore this band's other top tracks:... Show Me the Meaning of Playing Like Travis (5 goals, 7 assists, 5 2nd-assists, 7 D-blocks, 24 catches, 41 completions) It's Gotta Be Monica (2 goals, 9 assists, 2 2nd-assists, 2 D-blocks, 24 catches, 23 completions) What other hit songs would you like to hear from this week's Parity Stars?!?!

ICYMI // Were you registered for one of our Fall leagues but didn't see any additional information about refunds? Here's everything you need to know: Pro-rated cash/credit card refunds will be sent by default to team captains and to youth/junior + sub-on-the-fly players. If you paid with an OCUA credit, you will receive a credit back. We recommend opting for the credit option if you're thinking of signing up for a winter league. To do so, please e-mail us at [email protected] by October 22nd. You may also choose to donate your remaining balance. Donations are always welcome and most appreciated, especially given these unusual circumstances! Note that players who registered with a team will not get a direct refund from OCUA, but should expect something from their respective captains. All refunds, regardless of method, are being processed this Friday, October 23. We'd like to take a quick moment to thank you all once more for your ongoing support of OCUA and for promoting Ultimate in our city. It is with very heavy hearts that we announce the peaceful passing on August 23rd of longtime OCUA member and Hall of Famer, Mike Hall-Jones. Mike served as a member of the Board of Directors for both Ultimate Park Inc. and OCUA from 1998 to 1999. He was also a member of the UPI Land Sales committee and thus was one of many parties responsible for the establishment of UPI. Mike took his commitment to UPI above and beyond, carefully monitoring its initial development and then... devoting countless hours on-site in the following years to help nurture the new facility at a time when it needed much tender love and care. He literally did the dirty work, be it trenching, cutting, watering, or perhaps worst of all, line painting. Mike was also a fixture on the Masters Competitive Ultimate scene and played key roles in organizing both the 1999 and 2002 Nationals hosted in Ottawa. His hard work and knowledge of UPI were instrumental in making those tournaments as successful as they were. Not only did Mike enjoy playing the game, but he realized the organization needed members to step up and volunteer time to help the sport grow within the city. His impact on the sport of Ultimate in Ottawa is truly undeniable and we will forever be grateful for his dedication ------------------------------------------------------------------------- Funeral details and charitable organizations to support in Mike's honour have yet to be announced, however, feel free to reach out to [email protected] and we will make sure to share any information as soon as we hear anything.

It's Thank You Thursday here at OCUA and today, we would like to celebrate our newest Youth League Convenors, Terri and Halden! We owe them many many thanks for stepping up and volunteering, especially given the extra attention needed for leagues this summer We asked them a few questions to find out what drives them to get involved and share our awesome sport with the next generation of players check out their answers below! 1. What brought you to Ultimate? Terri came to ...Ultimate by joining a team her teaching staff was on and Halden got dragged along to sub 2. What do you enjoy most about coaching youth? The best thing about coaching these kids is spreading the love of Ulti! It's also great to get out there and run around with the kids and watch them learn and evolve. 3. What do you see as the benefits for youth to play Ultimate? We think Ultimate has some unique aspects that other sports don’t. The emphasis on self-regulation and friendliness between teams is great for kids. 4. Do you have any advice for other youth coaches? Make sure to balance learning skills with understanding the flow of the game. Encourage fun to ensure the kids are engaged! If you ever see Terri or Halden around, make sure to give them a nice high five

Even though there were only six weeks of Ultimate this summer, we've really enjoyed seeing how much fun you've had returning to play and hanging out with the best sports community in Ottawa (verified fact )! We've received many questions about what Fall Leagues will look like so we thought this would be the perfect time to announce a few exciting changes coming this year: - The sub-on-the-fly 5v5 hat league is moving to Monday nights and will be played exclusively at Carleto...n - We're introducing a new "veterans" 6v6 hat league on Tuesday evenings, also played at Carleton. The eligibility criteria for this league is TBA! - The Sunday evening MGM league will be held at UPI, where teams can enjoy each other's company with a BBQ afterwards Stay tuned for all your Fall news coming soon

Youth & Junior games were held beneath this beautiful rainbow last night. Dave felt so inspired he re-wrote the words to this famous tune Somewhere, over the rainbow, discs do fly. There’s a sport that I heard of, played in the bright blue sky.... Somewhere over the rainbow throwing from me to you. I hucked long for a point, made all of my dreams come true.
