Just a reminder to leave the wildlife in the forest! Fawns are not abandonded, their moms' leave them alone for long periods of time. Thanks for the picture Ernie.
Red oak can also regenerate through stump sprouts (coppice) where multiple sprouts can grow very quickly from the cut oak stump.
Acorns have started to sprout already, a little earlier than usual due to the amount of precipitation that we have received. These little guys are very susceptible to frost so fingers crossed!
Red Oak is a mid-tolerant species and so is managed using the shelterwood system. Openings are created in the overstory canopy to achieve those oh so perfect light conditions that red oak needs. Managing competition such as ironwood and red maple is very tricky as they can take over the site very quickly suppressing oak regeneration that has established.
