In 2019-2020, the Indigenous Studies team created a series of six webinars designed as professional development for teachers. Indigenous authors, community members and OCSB staff were featured in the webinars. Phyllis Webstad spent four days visiting students from 14 schools and sharing her personal story of having her Orange Shirt taken from her when she entered residential school at six years old. St. James students developed a sense of citizenship and expanded their world views when they composed emails to their new pen pal friends in Qitiqliq Middle School in Arviat, Nunavut. Students at St. Francis of Assisi School developed their Deep Learning competencies of citizenship, character, collaboration and creativity by decorating the doors of their school in support of Epilepsy awareness. In the 2019-2020 school year, we focused on the second aspect of our three-year Spiritual Theme Love Kindness & Mercy. Showing Kindness and Mercy not only strengthens the well-being of others, it also strengthens our sense of well-being. Jessica Ormondroyd, a grade 11 student at All Saints High School, has attended the social justice trip for the past two years. She found the trips life-changing! We had many outstanding achievements this year. Kinsley Jura, a St. Peter High School Student, is a 2020 Loran Scholar. She competed with 5,194 applicants from 21 regions across Canada to be one of just 36 chosen to receive the prestigious scholarship. Grade 12, Notre Dame High School student, Erin Donahue-Boyle, is a 2020 Schulich Leader Scholarship Fund winner. When Renee Mendrisky, a grade 6 Religion Teacher from St. Jerome School, saw a story on CTV news asking for Christmas wishes for the Canadian Armed Forces, she knew her little army of grade 6 students would be up for a Christmas challenge. My wish was that the grade 6 students would experience the power of giving this Advent season by writing their own messages of hope and joy to the Canadian men and women who serve abroad that won’t be home for Christmas, said Renee.
