Repost from @blue.ridge.farms This family’s story cracks my heart in half, yet fills me with such hope. Because when it comes down to it, all you can do is try.... Meet Harper Hanki... A beautiful little one year old who has been dealt a bad hand. Harper has recently been diagnosed with Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA). It is a devastating condition in which affected children lose spinal cord motor neurons. This affects their voluntary movements including swallowing, breathing, walking, crawling, and head and neck control. Left untreated, infants with SMA Type1 will not live beyond their second birthdays. The most effective treatment for SMA is a drug called ZOLGENSMA. A one-time, IV treatment, Zolgensma replaces the missing or non-working survival motor neuron (SMN1) gene with a new, working copy. Harper needs Zolgensma but the problem is that it is yet to be approved in Canada. Therefore the cost of the drug comes out of pocket, with a hefty price tag of 2.8 million dollars! Sadly, Zolgensma is only prescribed to children under the age of two. The sooner the treatment is administered, the more effective it is at preventing irreversible muscle damage. Harper turned 1 in July, which means her family has just under a year to come up with the 2.8 million dollars for treatment. This weekend our farm will be participating in a bottle drive for Harper. We ask that you to bring your bottles to @stonepostfarms or @blue.ridge.farms on Sunday. 100% of the proceeds go to Harper! Like Holly from TruWood Artisans said in the video; small businesses are the heart of the city and the country. When you support a local small business, you are making a difference! Find our directory of local small businesses at www.stormbison.ca

I helped design this graphic with Elaine Evans and Colleen Satyshur (UMN Bee Lab), and Sair Foltz (Xerces Society) recently. I hope it helps clear up confusion ...about how to provide stem-nesting habitat for bees in your garden. Approximately 30% of native bees nest above ground in cavities in stems and wood. Follow the instructions on this graphic to provide more opportunities for stem-nesting bees such as small carpenter bees (Ceratina) and small mason bees (Hoplitis). #bees #pollinators #habitat PDF: https://www.pollinatorsnativeplants.com//stemnestingbeeswe
