Morning rounds

Outer Island Guest Farm 02.01.2021

It’s been too long since I’ve posted anything here. I feel like I’m not winning at the social media game. I often have big plans with nice photos - things to tell a story about us and our life on the farm. But often it is life on the farm that prevents me from finding the time to post anything that I think people will find interesting. Maybe I over think it. Anyway my reasons of late are very much time related. Back in February I embarked on an amazing trip to Denmark, Irela...nd and Switzerland. Covid really started to spread as I was nearing the end of my trip. I made it home just before major closures and restrictions came into play and I went straight in to quarantine while trying to get my head around what the new norm was going to mean for business, farming, schooling etc. My kids and husband were already isolated in Kyuquot were Jed works. The kids are home now with me but Jed remains on lockdown in the village there (he’s been away for 3 months now). I’ve been consumed with all of this ever since and working very hard to answer so many questions about business and moving forward - or not for the summer. It is an intensely complicated situation. To date, all bookings have been cancelled until the end of June and now I agonize over what July and August will look like. There are many tight regulations and protocols that are in place for businesses to follow which is a great help and reassurance in terms of what is required to keep people safe, but it will change the face of what we can offer. We likely can’t have back to back bookings and be able to safely clean between guests. We have to make some difficult decisions about how to reduce our bookings. We have to face financial stress. We have to face the stress of disappointing our valued guests. We have to face the stress of potential exposure to Covid at any moment (with or without having guests). We have to face the stress of ‘have we done everything right’ to provide a safe place for people to come and for our family to live? Things will be different this year there is no question. If you are booked with us for July or August please bare with us while we continue to formulate a plan that considers everyone’s well being. We will be In touch directly very soon. Please reach out if you have questions in the meantime. For now, we are all keeping well, working hard on planning, keeping the farm running, and enjoying family time. See more
