Spring Announcements - New Executive Director and Selected 2020 Don Wright Scholar!! Christeen Francis Emily Critch https://mailchi.mp/6a5ceeb064dd/spring-anno...uncements St Michaels is pleased to announce our 2020 Don Wright Scholar, Emily Critch! We are very excited to have Emily in the shop this year! She will start sometime in the fall as soon as health protocols allow. Stay tuned for updates as we navigate the gradual re-opening of the printshop. Emily Critch is an artist, curator, and writer of Mi’kmaq and settler ancestry from Elmastukwek, Ktaqamkuk Territory (Bay of Islands, Newfoundland). She received her BFA in Visual Arts from Grenfell Campus, Memorial University of Newfoundland (2018). She has exhibited her work at venues such as Grenfell Art Gallery, The Rooms, Eastern Edge, and upcoming at the Hafnarfjörður Centre of Culture and Fine Art (Iceland). Emily has completed residencies with the Corner Brook Museum and Archives, St. Michael’s Printshop, and the Inaugural MOMUS Emerging Critics Residency in partnership with Concordia University. Her work has been supported by Arts NL and Canada Council for the Arts. She has been the recipient of several awards, including the Ellen Rusted Award for Print Media, and the ReginaldShepherd and Helen Parsons Shepherd Award for individual artistic development. Please join us in welcoming our new Executive Director, Christeen Francis, to St Michael's! Some of you may have met Christeen in the fall when was working in the shop while she was an artist in residence at Eastern Edge. Christeen fell in love with St Michael's and St John's during her residency and is looking forward to making St John's her new home. Christeen Francis completed her BFA at NSCADU, spent nine years in New York City, and returned to her hometown of Montreal to complete her MFA at Concordia University. A printmaker and musician, she ran a print shop in Brooklyn and played in several bands. She is committed to social and political print that engages with local communities and the public at large. She has exhibited in Canada, the United States, Germany, and Iceland, and is a member of the Justseeds Artist Cooperative. Her research interests include the right to the city, urban wildlife and wild spaces, and the homogenization of cities and culture.
