Introducing Vernon Avenue aka an all-you-can-dig grub buffet aka critter heaven. The odds were stacked against us with this one & by odds, we mean filthy, filthy grubs. Repulsive little alien-like squirmers that live underneath your lawn & basically ruin your life. Critters think they are DELICIOUS & will savagely rip your sod apart looking for them. Its not really their fault - if we were racoons, wed probably want them in our mouths all the time, too. But for homeowners, ...the whole situation is THE ABSOLUTE PITS. After ripping the existing ravaged, weedy lawn up, the story was further revealed as there were a few dozen uneaten grubs squirming away, likely delighted to have evaded the midnight critters but annoyed that we humans ultimately squelched their survival success. After a grubby trip to the dump with the old sod, we left the soil exposed overnight, so as to dry it out & give the critters one last go at it. We then rototilled, added fresh triple mix, graded & tamped, before rolling out the green carpet. We usually drive landscape staples into the corners of freshly laid sod to make it tougher for any potential critters to peel them back, but because they were a certainty here, we rolled chicken wire out on top of the sod & secured it with triple the staples wed normally use. Long (& gross) story, but... CHICKEN WIRE FOR THE WIN!!! Leave it on for about a month, soak the lawn with a good watering every single evening, let the sod & the soil solidify their union & let the grass grow. Then & only then, pull the chicken wire off, give the lawn its first hair trim, sit back on your porch & enjoy the fruits of your labour! (Ours, too!) Fall is prime-time for sod, lets get rolling! Last weeks project began like most others, it was a bit of a weedy, overgrown jungle. This time our equation was slightly different. Heres the math: 1 jungle - jungleness (+ dump) + 1 rototill... + 1 yard triple mix + 1 yew hedge + 1 forest grass border + 1 boxwood border + 1 birch tree + 2 yards black mulch + elbow grease + love ____________________ = 1 SWEET YARD Looks simple, but it was far from it! Loads of planning, communication(!!!), patience & precision (measure everything three xs, people!)... not to mention a few sore muscles... & it was ALL worth it. Seriously, there arent enough heart-eyed emojis in the world to describe how much we love it! There wasnt anything particularly wrong with this front yard. Sure, there were a few weeds, a half-dead Japanese Maple & a small, feisty army of Euonymuses on the verge of taking over the porch, but nothing too extreme. It was just sort of boring, thats all. More importantly, it did NOT match the vibrant personalities of the family it belonged to. We had to give the etch-a-sketch a good shake to kick off the makeover, which meant everything had to be dug up & taken to the d...ump. EVERYTHING, including some big ol chunky roots from a mammoth, long-since-chopped down tree that we had to power saw out of the ground. Next, we rototilled the soil with our new, shiny rototiller, which felt SO GOOD. We then graded & tamped all of the loose down, which believe you me, is one of the most gruelling tricep/bicep workouts youll ever meet. (Its important to tamp the loose soil down before you lay landscape fabric because you want the pins to stay in place & keep the fabric tight. Loose soil = loose fabric = Weed City, USA.) Strawberry vanilla hydrangea trees were planted in orchard-style just before we laid fabric & lavender puffs were then carefully planted in carefully measured, carefully chalked holes that were carefully fabric-sliced with an exacto knife. All soil crumbs were whisked away by a thorough blow from the blower before we delicately distributed a truckload of fresh cedar mulch. The delicious blooms on the strawberry vanilla trees will be cream-coloured initially & begin to blush into a berry red throughout the summer & fall. The blooms should explode like hot popcorn kernels over the next few days... (Stay tuned for photographic evidence!) You may think this story is about the execution of the project & all of the planning/physical work that went into it, which it is but also not really. Its actually about the very last photo in the album! After we pinned the fabric & sliced all of the planting holes, the homeowner dad came home with their eldest son. The son was curious about what we were up to so I explained it all to him & we showed him how to hammer the fabric nails in with the rubber mallet. After that, he & I grabbed our fabric chalk & drew on the landscape fabric for probably an hour. We wrote our names, drew our favourite foods, concocted visual stories about dinosaurs who love hamburgers & ice cream cones & robots that wear glasses who are actually aliens in disguise. In the end, the "orchard" turned out even cooler & more gorgeous than we thought it would, but that kid hang was even cooler. We had previously rocked a backyard clean-up at this St. Clair West home a couple years ago, so we were tickled pink when the homeowners asked us to transform their front yard! When planning an outdoor makeover, people typically begin with their front yards. Why? Two words. Curb. Appeal. Whats better than coming home to a gorgeous yard, anyway?! Gnarly weeds tangled in vines of tangled ivy, tangled in tangles of more weeds... tangles FOR DAYS, PEOPLE. Trapped underneath said... tangles were candy wrappers, pop cans, plastic utensils & take out containers that must have blown into the yard off the street. Gross! We dug out the vines, the weeds & the scraggly old grasses & filled the gaping holes full of fresh soil. Two words: Clean. Slate. The job was delayed because our blue fescue supplier (those little grass puffballs) did not have the amount we requested AND the ones they had werent as puffbally as they should be. Our love of finishing jobs on time was eclipsed by our LOVE of planting top notch plants & rightly so! A couple weeks later we were up to our eyeballs in puffballs!! Oh, & soil & compost & measuring tapes & string & black cedar mulch... Tidy rows of plants have become our signature touch the past couple years, apparently!? Anybody out there secretly not into grass? Installing it, maintaining it, protecting it, nurturing it, throwing money at it, watching raccoons tearing it up every night like theyre at a boxing day sale at Grubs R Us? Well see that secret and raise you another bigger secret: YOURE NOT ALONE! Keeping a well-maintained, healthy, envy-of-the-whole-street lawn is a big and ongoing commitment. Albeit a satisfying one, obviously, when you catch your neighbours drooling over it or... when you open your front door to a sea of vibrant green and spot your kiddos playing on it like theyre on the cover of a Sears friggin catalogue <3 (do they still make those?) Satisfying but often costly both time-wise and financially, the "perfect lawn" suits some families, but not all. Heres another secret for you: either family suits us!!! Take, for example, this family who fell into that later category. They were soon setting off on a year-long VW trip across Europe with their 6 & 2 year olds, and renting their house out while they are gone. They LOVED the idea of a new lawn but werent going to be a around to care for it & wanted a zero-fuss, zero-muss makeover, until they returned home. We had just the makeover in mind! We basically arrived on scene and immediately started hacking away at the wilderness of both front and back yards. Once we got them chopped right down, we removed the hedges, lawn and gardens & drove them to the dump. Next, we landscape-fabric-ed EVERYTHING (as if wed leave it naked!?) and then plopped about a million pounds of natural cedar mulch on top of it. Sounds pretty simple, but it was a big project that required, ironically, a great deal of fuss!!! This project was a regular slope opera! But dont worry, we shut that drama right down. Like many lawns & gardens before it, Duries front yard was being bullied by weeds. The worst part was that the yard made the house look shabby, even though its an absolute stunner! Good thing we have no time for bullies! The usual epic tear down, sod-lifting, dump-tripping, topsoil-spreading & sod-laying were in order, naturally. But that slope!? That slope made everything just a little... trickier than usual. Trickier AND more interesting... Using our combined brains & brawn, we DID NOT let the self-propelling sod cutter slam into the neighbours street-parked car and we DID NOT instigate an avalanche when we spread a mountain of topsoil. We DID, however, lay & secure fresh-from-the-farm sod thanks to our nimble crouching muscles, unflappable determination & a sack full of extra long landscape staples. We also ripped out a few old, invasive, gnarly corner bushes that had started tangling around their next door neighbours garden (bullies everywhere!?), added a whack of triple mix & some extra manure, three young hydrangea bushes along the porch wall and a troop of cheerful hostas along driveway. These subtractions & additions in combination with the new lawn made not only for a striking exterior, it was one that FINALLY did the house justice! This front yard transformation was a complete success! And when all was said & done, the bullies lost and the good guys won. Dont you just love when that happens?! Is your yard getting bullied?
