The struggle to control mice and rats is usually viewed in terms of humans vs. rodents, but wildlife such as birds of prey are often not recognized as players in this battle, said Dr. Maureen Murray, director of the Tufts Wildlife Clinic. Many people are surprised to learn that the mouse poison they use in their basement can also kill the great horned owl hooting in the neighborhood.
I have asked ministry staff to develop options for improvements to how rodenticides are regulated in B.C., including consideration of bans, Heyman wrote.

If rodenticides produced an enduring stutter for this golfer, can you imagine the lasting damage rodenticides are having on our wildlife?

HELP SAVE WILDLIFE | REPORT FATAL POISONINGS HERE Dear friends, We are extremely concerned about our owls and wildlife. It has come to our attention that more animals have been harmed by rat poisoning than we knew. In an effort to better understand the numbers, Owl Watch BC and its partners are collecting data. If you encounter a dead or sick owl or other wildlife, please let us know in the link below. You can contact Deanna Pfeifer directly- [email protected] or 250-514-28...60 Defend Them All Foundation #bcbanrodenticides #bcsaveowls #BCSaveWildlife #defendingthemall See more
There are only three known spotted owls remaining in the wild. Under the federal Species at Risk Act, the federal government must step in and take emergency action when the province fails to do so. Make your hoot heard and write in to the government here: https://www.wildernesscommittee.org//demand-protection-las... Thank you Wilderness Committee for your work on this initiative!
This is part of a bigger move by several municipalities to deal with this growing problem, said Coun. Jeff Bateman. The reality is that it’s not only owls that face this threat. It’s all birds of prey, dogs, cats and even in unfortunate and rare cases, children as well.
It's not too late to report a dead owl that you found sometime in the past! Far too often, owls go unreported when well-intentioned residents dispose of carcasses in the garbage rather arrange for a necropsy. Even if this happened to you, there are still steps you can take to help out. ... If you found a dead bird suspected of rodenticide poisoning, please document it here: (Feel free to message us directly or in the comments below with any questions you might have!)
We must protect our owls. They are threatened not only by rodenticides, but also by ecosystems in decline. This starved Snowy Owl in the CBC is exemplary.

Speak up for raptors in Abbotsford!
OWL Orphaned Wildlife Rehabilitation Society is a non-profit dedicated to the survival of raptors. Many poisoned or otherwise injured owls come to OWL for rehabilitation - such as this handsome, Northern saw-whet owl. After rehabilitation from a damaged eye, he successfully re-entered the wild this weekend! Raise a hoot for OWL Orphaned Wildlife Rehabilitation Society!!
Sadly another owl found dead, likely due to eating poisoned rats. No visible signs of trauma. This owl was found on swift street in Victoria this evening. I have notified the wildlife bird mortality hotline 1-866-431-2473 and a necropsy will be arranged. Thank you to the person who reported finding it.

This Boreal owl is rarely seen by humans. It was found dead in someone's yard recently with no sign of injury in Fort Steele, BC . Because of recent media attention the person who found it was able to report it and have necropsy arranged. Thank you to everyone who is helping to spread the word about the need to report a sick or dead raptor in BC so testing can be done for rat poison.

Enough is enough. Ban rodenticides NOW. #bcbanrodenticides #SpeciesAtRisk #animallaw #owlwatch
Lethargic, poisoned rats are easy prey for raptors. What happens when rodenticides remain for >100 days in the liver? They pass on through secondary-poisoning to owls and other wildlife, leading to their injury or death.
Just like how secondary poisoning occurs in owls, seabirds experience secondary oiling. Watch this informative video by seeker here!
IF YOU FIND A DEAD OR DYING BAT - please take photos and videos, and follow the instructions at the link below. PLEASE SHARE! New research indicates that roden...ticides and other chemicals commonly used to manage unwelcome wildlife and insects are having a greater impact on the ecosystem than previously realized. While secondary impacts on non-target predator species such as owls, falcons, and coyotes are well documented, evidence of bioaccumulation within less obvious members of the food chain - including bats - is raising even more concerns. #bcbanrodenticides #bcsaveowls #BCSaveWildlife #animalprotection #Defendingwildlife
This week, another municipality joins the wave against rodenticides.
Raise a hoot for California and CA Governor Newsom's work seriously curbing the commercial use of anticoagulant rodenticides!
Thank you to the Vancouver Humane Society for their organizational support and the fantastic work they do in the community!
BRAND NEW STUDY from Tufts University uncovers the uncontrolled proliferation of rat poison in our ecosystems. Anticoagulant Rodenticides were found in ALL 43 red-tailed hawks tested by the Tufts clinic from 2017-2019. "All the birds tested had been brought into the wildlife clinic to be treated for various reasons but had not survived due to injury or illness."
