Own The Interview 13.12.2020

I’m a big believer in the power of goal setting. In a year that has felt a little like Groundhog Day, I wanted to bring in the holidays early. My goal from the first weekend of November has been to do one ‘holiday’ thing a weekend to bring in those vibes. Lighting a balsam scented candle, watching too many Hallmark movies (actually, how many is too many really?), playing holiday tunes, decorating cookies by @hello_hoopla, putting up a stocking, cutting a tree for the... living room and one of my favourites so far has been driving up the local mountain to play in the snow. How are you making the most of this holiday season? Comment below See more

You didn’t get the job and you have no idea why. You felt prepared and you answered all of the questions with ease. In fact, you made it all the way to the last interview and still, no offer. Well, I’ve got some good news and some bad news. ... Here’s the bad news. The other candidate, they were able to convey more powerfully that they were able to solve the hiring manager’s pain points. It’s not just about preparing for your interview; it’s about preparing to respond with the most relevant answers for the position you’ve applied for. You might be thinking, ‘where do I even begin’? Enter Jenna stage left; let me help. [This is worth sharing] The hidden job market a.k.a job postings that aren’t publicly advertised are a thing. Hiring managers will create space and find budget for great people... Is the 80% statistic true that @forbes shared back in 2018...likely not; however, whether the actual percentage is 7% or 70%, it doesn’t truly matter. The reality is these ‘hidden jobs’ do exist. So why is this important? Well...working in your dream job, at your dream company, could be closer than you think. A common piece of advice I share with my clients is to seek out companies and leaders they admire and want to work with. @linkedin is an incredible resource and so is your network; reach out to department managers, reach out to your contacts and let them know you’re interested in working there/with them when the opportunity presents itself. Let them know your WHY and of course, share what value YOU can bring to the organization. You could be just an email away from starting the interview process. [save this for later: part 2] The STAR+L method was designed by a consulting firm to support candidates in answering behavioural interview questions; example, tell me about a time...... Over these set of slides above, I share an example of how I would leverage STAR+L to answer the initial question on slide one. Interview Tip: provide as specific examples as you can when answering the interview question vs. speaking hypothetically. These type of interview questions (depending on the complexity should take anywhere from 1-2.5 minutes to answer. Enjoy and reach out below if you have any questions! @ North Vancouver, British Columbia See more
