We are so sad to announce that our studio doors will be closed for two weeks, effective tomorrow November 8th as per the recent announcement around indoor fitness facilities from our public health official, Dr. Bonnie Henry. - Since our initial re-open, we have done everything possible to create and keep a safe environment for our members, staff and instructors by following our Covid Safety Plan that was approved by Fraser & Coastal Health. We continued to take and reinforce... additional measures that we felt were needed for the fitness industry. - Our pre-existing safety plan plus whatever further recommendations made by Fraser & Coastal Health will be reinstated at our studio upon its re-opening date. - We encourage you to take this time for yourself and your loved ones. Pose of the Week Guide: Bakasana, Crow Pose Did you know Bakasana is actually Crane Pose with straight arms and the Sanskrit for Crow Pose is Kakasana? Whichever variation you choose channel your inner bird and take flight! Benefits:... Strengthens arms, shoulders and core. Stretches the back and groin. How to: 1. Begin in a deep squat, Garland Pose, Malasana (check out last week's blog post for a how to!) 2. Tilt the torso forward so that the arms fit between the knees. 3. Place the hands on the floor ahead of the feet, hands in line with outer edges of the shoulders. 4. Lift the hips above the shoulders keeping hands on the floor. 5. Step the feet together, coming high on the balls of the feet. Keeping hips knees and toes turned out. 6. Bring the knees to rest on the backs of the arms (triceps) or to grip the outer shoulders. 7. Shift forward until the elbows stack over the wrists. 8. Keep reaching the chest forward as you lift one heel at a time up towards the glutes. 9. Press the arms as straight as possible. 10. Spine is rounded, squeezing the inner thighs together and lifting the space between the shoulderblades. 11. Hold and breathe for 3-5 breaths. 12. To release bring your feet to the mat, turn the toe forward as you fold forward into Uttanasana, Forward Fold then lift back up to Tadasana, Mountain pose. Modify it: If having trouble lifting the hips enough while coming up onto the balls of your feet then try standing on a block. Malasana, Garland Pose is a very deep squat that brings the pelvis very close to the earth. Visualize energy flowing from the very base of the spine through the crown of the head to balance and cleanse the chakras system. Benefits: Stretches the low back, hips and groin. Aids in digestion and stimulates the metabolism.... How to: 1. Begin standing in Tadasana, Mountain pose feet hip distance apart. 2. Turn your toes out slightly from the hips. 3. Bend into your knees, allow your hips to sink towards the mat between your heels. 4. Bring your palms touch in front of your heart in Anjali Mudra, gently pressing the elbows into the knees. 5. Press into the outer edges of both feet, keeping weight back into the heels. 6. Shoulders stacked above hips, legs slightly engaged and sternum lifting away from the navel. 7. Hold and breathe for 3-5 breaths. 8. To release bring your hands to the mat, turn the toe forward as you fold forward into Uttanasana, Forward Fold then lift back up to Tadasana, Mountain pose. Modify it: If you're coming up onto the balls of your feet then place a folded towel or blanket beneath the knees. If knees are falling in first try pressing the elbows into the knees then if there is still more weight in the inner arches then turn the toes more forward and in.
