Here is another great opportunity to learn how Field Trial judges think and what they are looking for. March 30 and April 6. This is a fundraiser for VIRC and you need to pre-register. Even if you only run Hunt Tests, I’m sure there will be lots of interesting, thought provoking discussion. https://viretrieverclub.ca/online-field-trial-judging-semi/

For those who judge...and those who want to understand judging, this might be worth a watch. It will likely have a field trial slant, but should be interesting.

I pulled this off of The Retriever Coach - Kevin Cheff ...I miss having him in our neck of the woods...this is some great information for the newer amateur hand...ler on tackling blinds...(and reminders for us not so new ) I remember on more than one occasion when I first started trialing Kevin giving me some of these great suggestions when I was at trials and was struggling with my blinds. Although we are a competitive sport it’s important to remember that we need to always help and encourage our new handlers who may struggle. We all started from the same spot..

These pages could be beneficial to our newer retriever trainers. More seasoned trainers can sometimes sound like they are talking strange language to newcomers.

A group of women find solace in the outdoors - with each other and man’s best friend. For a hunter, the time spent working, training, and hunting with your dog creates a bond like no other, but it’s not often you find female trainers. Meet Lee Lee Milner and her Girls with Gundogs.

Another test weekend is in the books! 2020 is a year to remember, for the test that almost wasn’t! Thank you to a very supportive Club that made our tests happen. Hunt Tests are A LOT of work! Something many people may not realize, is the hours and hoursand hours that Rick Roberts donates to preparing the grounds so that we don’t lose our dogs in the cover and bramble. Swallowfield could not be used for tests, trials or training, if not for Rick’s work. THANK YOU Rick...! Thank you to our judges, many of whom passed on the opportunity to run their own dogs, so that others could run theirs. Thanks to Sylvia Lawson, Lorne Parker, Maria Soto, Leslie Gardiner, Peter Fargey, Carol Redekopp, Dave Thompson, Louise Roberts, Tracey Griffin and Sheila Kenny for judging our tests. Swallowfield is a big place, and much of it is not accessible by vehicle. Huge thanks to our equipment Marshalls, John Costello, Kyle Sawayama, Ron Crawford and Leslie Milne, who worked their butts off, moving equipment and helping in every way with the tests, from first thing in the morning, to the very end of the long days. All of our clip-board Marshalls, Catherine Preece, Marjorie Moore, Sheila Kenny, Celine Calahoo and Krista Wendland, saw that the holding blinds were full and kept track of those running at other stakes. Thank you to all the people who entered! These are some strange times, and people put their trust in us, that we would responsibly host an event with the threat of COVID always on our minds. Social distancing seems to be more natural now. Everyone was very supportive of our efforts, and appreciative of being able to run their dogs. Thank you to Geri Nolan Hilfiker and DogShow.ca for the test secretary duties! Using an online service for accepting our entries was a learning curve for all of us, but it was all positive! Joanne Fraser took over the job of providing lunches to the gunners. We had to change up how we do things, to be more COVID savvy. Thanks Joanne for taking on that task! Congratulations to everyone who got a leg or a new title. And even if you didn’t, you stepped up to the line with your buddy and enjoyed the great outdoors! Well done! Thank you! Let's all continue to...Be kind, be calm and be safe. Sincerely, Mary Shillabeer PRHRC Test Chair Edit...Yikes, I forgot to specifically mention Tracey Griffin and all the work she puts in hauling and organizing the equipment trailer! The new protocols we had to implement for COVID somewhat fell on her shoulders. Also for dealing with the birds at the end of each day. Thanks to Louise Roberts for organizing the gunners, and coming up with one on notice on Sunday. Also, thanks Louise, for living without Rick while he worked the fields!
