Did you know among all provinces and territories of Canada, British Columbia has the mildest climate? It has the longest frost-free periods of Canada and flowers often start blooming as early as February. Incredible squid footage by our good friend and local diver Krystal Janicki! You can hear orcas singing in the beginning, how cool is that?!
Have you ever seen a Basket Star? Basket Stars feed by perching in an elevated position and extending their arms in a net-like fashion perpendicular to the current. In the wild they may live up to 35 years and weigh up to 11lbs! Image by Lonely Spruce Photography
Campbell River is an area with some of the highest tidal exchanges in North America, this results in vast amounts of water moving through the relatively narrow Discover Passage at very fast rates. This high water flow (often with currents at 10-14 knots) brings in a huge amount of nutrients, which over time has resulted in walls of colourful life. Yellow sulphur sponge, finger sponge, strawberry anemones, purple and green urchins, rockfish, lingcod, cabezon, and even giant pacific octopus!

This giant pacific octopus was out of the den, seeming to interact with us as much as we were with them. The encounter felt like both species were just as curio...us and playful. Pretty difficult to fully express how amazing and unusual an experience like this is! Krystal’s light shined bright at the right second *An octopus arm(s) on the regulator is not recommended, and could turn into a problem fast. We did move off to give space, with the octo staying put and amongst us. It was later that the arms moved slowly upwards, touching/tasting.
