Ayurvedic medicine is built around the five elements ether, air, fire, water and earth. A combination of these five elements makes up the three humors, or doshas, known as vata, pitta and kapha. The doshas are believed to be responsible for each person’s physiological, mental, emotional and spiritual health. Each person possesses a unique ratio of each dosha, with one usually standing out more than the others. This ratio is said to define their Ayurvedic constitution. F...actors like diet and lifestyle can influence the doshas and when any one of the doshas increases, it leads to an imbalance. Adopting dosha-specific practices leads to balance and harmony in the body and mind, which in Ayurveda is the key to well being. Are you curious about the world of Ayurveda? Our Diploma of Holistic Nutrition offers foundational studies in Ayurvedic Medicine with courses like ‘Foundations of Ayurveda’, ‘Ayurvedic Nutrition’ and ‘Ayurvedic Herbs and Spices’. When it comes to New Year’s intentions and resolutions, we’re all about taking it slow and setting manageable goals. Many of us set unrealistic goals which more often than not, set us up for failure. We like to ease ourselves in by setting one or two small, attainable goals for the first couple weeks of January. Once we’ve checked these off our list or made them a part of our routine, we usually find ourselves ready and motivated to take on more ambitious goals. Our first intention this year: Drink one full glass of room temperature water upon waking up, before doing anything else. This is a completely realistic goal that leaves us hydrated, refreshed, energized and ready to take on the rest of the day. What’s one simple goal you can set for yourself this January?

We wanted to share this simple digestion supporting infusion by @mynewroots for anybody feeling like their digestion needs a little extra support after enjoying all of the holiday goodness over the last month or two. Ginger-Cinnamon-Fennel Tea: Cinnamon, unlike other digestive herbs, is best taken after a meal, to help stimulate the digestive system. It is warming in nature and very sweet.... Ginger strengthens digestion, improves circulation, and warms the body from the inside out. It is also antibacterial and supports our immunity. Fennel is a powerful digestive aid, reducing bloating and gas. It helps to regulate appetite, and boost metabolism. This warming blend is sure to comfort your digestion and help ease you back into routine and feeling your best for the start of a new year. photo: @mynewroots See more

Natureit provides us with everything we need to survive as humans, yet so many of us go mindlessly about our busy daily lives that we begin to lose touch and take it for granted. These beautiful words by @northandnourish serve as a wonderful reminder to always recognize and appreciate the value of what nature has to offer. You don’t have to look far to notice the subtle clues nature leaves to try and care for us. It’s in the way dandelions and chickweed contain so many nutrients essential to our bodies, spread out in fervour. Or how the branches of trees, and the pieces of seaweed pushed in from the ocean look like lungs. All these things, the secret to our life on earth as we know it; she gives so freely and we take too much photo: @northandnourish

In a new episode of Pacific Rim College Radio, drug policy researcher Alan Cassels takes a deep look into some less than desirable tactics of the pharmaceutical and health care industries. Alan has been investigating and reporting on nefarious industry strategies for more than 2 decades, and his booksSelling SicknessandSeeking Sicknessexpose the dirty underbelly that some corporations and leaders would rather you did not know about. If you have been satisfied with the ...mainstream Covid-19 narrative, this episode might be a bit disruptive. If you have been questioning it, then you might find some answers here, as well as more questions. He discusses the limitations of PCR testing, the predominant testing model for determining Covid cases; the new Pfizer vaccine and the misleading propaganda related to it; Covid case numbers; and so-called protective measures. Going beyond Covid-19, Alan also explores questionable pharmaceutical selling strategies; conditions such as high cholesterol, osteoporosis, and hypertension; the industry of influenza; and drug safety advisories. If episode 28 with holistic pharmacist RoseMarie Pierce opened up a few uncertainties for you about the motivations of the pharmaceutical industry, this episode is going to rip the lid right off. We hope you are stirred by this episode of Pacific Rim College Radio with Alan Cassels. The Principles of Permaculture Design are a set of universal design principles that can be applied to any location, climate and culture and allow for efficient and sustainable human habitation and food production systems. When we integrate all of the separate design principles, we can create a functional and synergistic system in which each element interacts and works harmoniously together in the most efficient way possible. The 12 Principles of Permaculture Design are:... Observe and Interact: Pay attention. Catch and Store Energy: Harvest while it’s abundant. Obtain a Yield: Make sure you’re getting valuable results. Apply Self Regulation and Accept Feedback: Be open to modify dysfunctional behaviours Use and Value Renewable Resources: Reduce dependency on scarce resources. Produce no Waste Design from Patterns to Details: Observe natural/social patterns and apply them to design. Integrate Rather than Segregate: Capitalize on how things work together. Use Small and Slow Solutions: local resources and responses, manageable scale. Use and Value Diversity: Diversity leads to greater resilience. Use Edges and Value the Marginal: Important things happen at the intersections. Creatively Use and Respond to Change: Envision possibilities and intervene in effective ways. See more

We love sharing knowledge and tips when it comes to sustainability. Our most recent favourite zero-waste tip comes from @sarah.robertson.barnes and it’s all about eliminating the use of paper towels in your home. Eliminating paper towels is a great way to reduce waste and save money. Paper products (even when made from recycled content) require a LOT of resources to produce, ship, purchase, bring home, and dispose of. Nothing breaks down in a landfill and industrial compo...sting (if you have access to it) is energy intensive as well. Because they are cheap and disposable, we tend to overuse them. So we buy more and more and more, just to throw it out. Instead of paper towels and napkins, our family uses old towels and cloth napkins. You can also use old t-shirts, sheets, or bath towels. Thrift stores are another great source for tea towels and napkins. If you like functionality of a roll, search unpaper towel for a local maker, shop, or DIY pattern. For upkeep, we keep a basket for used towels under the kitchen sink and toss them in the wash with other household linens. Washing reusables does require resources, but far less than the demand for new products on an endless basis. Paper towel production uses tons of bleaching agents, millions of trees, and billions of gallons of water every year, exploiting ecosystems with far reaching implications for the land and the Indigenous peoples who protect it. We are destroying forests and polluting water for a throwaway convenience products in our homes. This is not sustainable. What do you say? Is paper towel a necessity in your home? Would you give Sarah’s tips a try toat the very leastreduce your paper towel usage? photo: @sarah.robertson.barnes See more
