There is a crustacean invasion happening in BC’s coastal waters now. Invasive European Green Crabs outcompete native crabs and destroy eelgrass habitat important to salmon. Read the interactive story map from the Strait of Georgia Data Centre to learn how you can help stop the spread and then share with your friends!

Seaweed farming is attracting more and more interest in B.C. as a solution for providing a sustainable food source and creating much-needed jobs in indigenous and small coastal communities. In mid-march the United Nation Global Compact launched a 'Seaweed Manifesto' with a suite of goals including: food security for developing nations; carbon capture to offset climate change; support for biodiversity in marine ecosystems; and, to provide jobs and generate economic development. Watch our recent Salmon Matters with Chair of Cascadia Seaweed, Bill Collins, on how seaweed aquaculture could benefit B.C.: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2-6QNxn7uq4&t=1640s

Did you know that healthy estuaries are key to the overall survival and diversity of salmon? That’s because different species of juvenile salmon use different areas of the estuary to feed and build up strength to survive the ocean. We know this thanks to donors who supported the Pacific Salmon Foundation’s Marine Science Program. Findings are already leaving a legacy of better policies and management practices that will help salmon thrive. May is ‘Leave a Legacy Month’ it’s a... great time to consider how you can leave a legacy for salmon and your family! In addition to contributions that donors make annually, supporters are making a longer-term commitment by including a gift in their will to Pacific Salmon Foundation. Gifts of all sizes will make a difference and can be made through a gift of cash, stocks or bonds, registered plans, or life insurance. If you’d like to learn more, contact Margaret Buttner, at 604-664-7664 or [email protected] In the meantime we hope you enjoy this webinar with Devinder Sidhu on the essentials of estate planning and how you can leave a legacy for salmon and your family!

The PSE is the first tool to bring together, and make available, the best data on salmon in BC all in one place - Katrina Connors, Director of the Salmon Watersheds Program. Thank you to Island Fisherman Magazine for this great feature on PSF's Pacific Salmon Explorer, an online data visualization tool that summarizes information on salmon status and trends, including habitat, throughout BC!

PSF's Community Salmon Program supports SeaChange Marine Conservation Society as they work with local coastal communities to help switch from traditional chain anchor moorings that scour and fragment eelgrass habitat to environmentally-friendly ones that don't interrupt vital Pacific salmon habitat! Pictured here is Maria Catanzaro who works for PSF on the Salish Sea Marine Survival Projects Nearshore & Estuary Studies. Amazing work by all!

PSF is pleased to share an update on the Percy Walkus Hatchery, located at Katit (Oweekeno Village) in Rivers Inlet on the territory of the Wuikinuxv Nation - Administration. This hatchery has been operating since 2016 and PSF is pleased to serve on the Hatchery Management Committee as well as support the fundraising efforts. The Percy Walkus Hatchery works to enhance the world-famous (because of their immense size with many salmon over 60lbs) Chinook populations on the Wanuk...v River, Kilbella River, and Chuckwalla River in Rivers Inlet. This past month, volunteers participated in a successful egg take for the 2020 Wanukv Chinook Broodstock Program, as seen in the images attached. An estimated ~318,000 eggs were retrieved this year, and these eggs will further develop at the Percy Walkus Hatchery carefully overseen by their trusted staff. PSF would like to give thanks to the efforts and contributions to this project by the many vested partners. Special thanks to the Wuikinuxv Nation - Administration, Oweekeno Wuikinuxv Nation, Fisheries and Oceans Canada, Rick Hansen Foundation, Duncanby Lodge, Good Hope Cannery, Pacific Salmon Commission and many other donors who help make this hatchery such a great success. Exciting things to come from this incredibly well-operated hatchery!

The Pacific Salmon Foundation’s Salmon Watersheds Program is proud to be launching significant updates to an interactive online tool that explores the status of salmon and their habitats in B.C. This tool aptly named the Pacific Salmon Explorer is one of the most comprehensive sources of salmon data in B.C. and is a catalyst for collaborative salmon conservation and recovery planning. Updates to the tool include its expansion beyond the North and Central Coast into Southe...rn B.C., increasing access to data to over 80% of salmon in the province. Thanks to the many First Nations, Fisheries and Oceans Canada staff, and other salmon experts who partnered with us on this work. We are also grateful for the significant support we received from Fisheries and Oceans Canada Coastal Restoration Program and the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation.
