Now that the seasons are changing, it's a good time to think preemptively about back up power. Here are some of your options to be used as stand alone or in tandem. Automatic Standby System ... In the event of a power outage a voltage sensor automatically turns on the generator which feeds power into your generator panel and out to the associated circuits. This is the most popular and commonly used system for home and business owners. These generators are fueled by utility delivered natural gas and they typically have an automatic transfer switch which ensures that none of the generated power will be fed into the public grid. Automatic Emergency System As with above, In the event of a power outage a voltage sensor automatically turns on the generator which sends electricity to the generator panel and out to the associated circuits. This system is not dependent on utilities and requires its own fuel source. You will often find this in hospitals, government and other institutional buildings as well as homes in rural areas. These generators are fuelled by diesel, gasoline, or liquid propane and often have a manual transfer switch. Grid Tie Systems Power is generated through solar, wind, and hydroelectric. The power produced is fed through inputs to a controller and then into an inverter which synchronizes with the public electricity grid. Depending on how much power your system produces your electrical meter will either slow down or spin backwards which results in a credit. Often this system is used in conjunction with either of the above systems. UPS Systems Usually used in offices for computer equipment, this is essentially a battery pack and it is installed between the wall outlet and the electrical equipment. The systems are rated by time (30, 60, 90 minutes).
