Good morning everyone! Welcome to the first full week of the new year. With lockdown in effect across the province it’s easy to make excuses to not get out there. Without breaking any rules there’s still plenty of things you can attempt to keep yourself in high spirits. 1) Hike local. Hit your local trails and explore your hometown . Many urban centres have vast sections of trail that we often take for granted. Get out stretch those legs, try those new snowshoes out, perfect ...the perfect pulk pull (eat your heart out dr.zeuss) 2) Dial in your photography skills. New gear? Old gear? Watch some YouTube tutorials then hit the streets/trail practising your skills and getting ready for when that perfect opportunity hits on a trip for an amazing photo. 3) New skills. Pick up something new. Cross country skiing , ice fishing, hell even spoon carving. Challenge yourself with new tasks. 4) Prep for this year. 2021 is your year , we’re making that call right now. Prep for that trip to woodland caribou . Get that new canoe you’ve been fawning over for the past four years. Pull the trigger on starting the YouTube channel you’ve always wanted to. Camp at least once every month this year. It’s in you and nothing is stopping you, you are a canoeing / camping juggernaut. Basically it’s up to you and you alone to shake the 2020’s off and dive paddle first into 2021. We thoroughly expect to see big things this year from everyone . It’s going to be huge, it’s going to be positive , it’s going to be the year of the canoe. Like a portage. What can we say about 2020? Just thinking about it makes my head hurt. But what if we think about it this way. 2020 was bridge to better times in 2021. A way to connect some good experiences with new great experiences . We’ve all been there, it goes like this. Canoe on head you slog through the muck. You climb hills, duck under trees and trip on all manner of roots and rocks in your way. Your frustration builds , your shoulders ache and you start to convince ...yourself that maybe canoeing isn’t for you and you’re an idiot for taking this route. It’s a dark place and one we all seem to skip over when we write our trips reports. But all of a sudden, there is a light breeze, the smell of water, the slightest glimpse of the lake . And like a Herculean god of myth BOOM! your shoulders are fine. ZOOM! your pace picks up. The sun shines down on you piercing the depressive fog and a smile crosses your face. You love this and you wouldn’t want to be anywhere else. 2020 = portage from hell 2021 = the possibility of new adventures and new experiences. Be safe , enjoy your evening and let’s toast to the crappy portages. They made us the paddlers we are today. Happy New Years Eve Paddle In
