Another 10km in the @nelocanada 550 surfski! The major thing I’ve noticed by paddling more surfski is how tiring it is!! Paddle sports like sup and oc are still single blade sports where my body has learned to relax in the air time rather effectively. In double bladed sports like surfski or kayak there is less air time as the pull stroke on one side is actually setting up the next stroke already on the other side. With practice this micro relaxing will improve but ...right now I think it’s an awesome feeling to get a different workout on the water and search for ways to improve my connection to the stroke and to the water. It was her first time paddling having to crack through ice the whole time. Lots of ice build up on her board making it a little hard to take the boots off lol. The only non ice spot is where she stood. As crazy as people might think we are it was great to see a couple of swimmers out there working on their cold water skills. Can you possibly paddle toooooo much? Answer : yes, definitely yes I had planned to take all of January off from the water especially after having increased my annual km by almost 20 percent 2019 vs 2020 It is always recommended that you take a complete break from on water activity at some point each year / cycle. But with temps above seasonal for January I’ll switch my off to oc paddling which is easier on my body than stand up ... Looks like February will have to be my off water month as temps return to normal with most days a low of minus 15 and a high of minus 7 Don’t be afraid to recover. PSA for winter paddlers!! Been getting some time in the @kaiwaacanoes Ares the past week. Here’s some free lessons for winter paddling. 1-I’ve broken two plugs in two days. Plastic tube freezes and just snaps off when putting the cover on /off. Thus I now have the bottom halves tumbling around inside the boat lol 2-dry your boat off before putting cover on. Otherwise it won’t come off the next day. (See pic). Cover frozen to boat. ... 3-rudder cables freeze. Yup no rudder when you start so don’t try to force the pedals in the beginning.
