After 2 shifts of wearing disposable masks I had to take things into my own hands! The fibres of the disposable masks were driving my nose CRAZY!! I just couldn’t stop rubbing and touching my nose....touch your face as little as possible was constantly going through my head!!! As soon as the mask was off, my nose was fine! So I made a mask... that has a removable nose wire, and a pocket for a filter that can be removed between washes!!! Thanks CraftPassion.pl for the amazing video!!!

How can a Paediatric Physiotherapist help with a lip and tongue tie? BODY WORK! :D Often children with lip and tongue tie have a tethering effect through many central soft tissues which limits their ability to rotate and/ or cross midline. ... Gross Motor monitoring and play can help to enhance their ability to move into these restricted areas! Contact me or Rebirth Wellness Centre for an appointment.

What happens at an initial assessment for Paediatric Physiotherapy? A back ground history will be taken starting with pregnancy, birth through to current age, with reason for assessment. A gross Motor Assessment will be done by playing on the floor with the child with age appropriate toys. Feeding, nappy changes or cuddles are free to happen at anytime during the assessment. A verbal summary of the child’s skills and a general overall gross motor development will be explaine...d. If intervention is required it will be explained, demonstrated and expected to be done at home between visits. For Pelvic Floor Physiotherapy, the Initial Assessment will be similar to above. The will just be a short screening of gross motor skills. There is no internal exam but to examine the pelvic floor muscles the child will be asked to remove their underwear with both child and parent consent. There is lots of colouring and drawing our bodies during this assessment and treatment to learn how our bowel and bladders function.

For those of you still requiring Physiotherapy but would like the safety of your home, I am now able to offer secure video calls. How can I treat your child when I am not in the room with you?! Easy! I have done it many many times when a child is only comfortable with Mum and Dad and I have to stand on the other side of the room. Mum and dad, you become the therapist! I will have a doll with me and show you what I would like you to try or I will ask you to play with your chi...ld in a specific way so I can see how they are moving. The bonus of this method is that you can record the call so you can go back and remember what we talked about, or have the demonstration shown to you over and over. How do you choose this method? You can book through me directly or through Rebirth's Mind Body App. Just say you would like to do a video call and you are all set. I will call you on your cell number at the time of the appointment. Everything else is the same! EASY and SAFE and Peace of mind! Don't sit at home worrying about your little one. I can still see them! Rebirth Wellness Team

Let's Talk TUMMY TIME!!! Tummy Time should start within the first 3 days of life! Find out how to make it easier and more enjoyable for everyone in this video. Do it on your chest! Make sure your baby’s arms are under their chest so they have something to push off of! ... Add a towel under their chest if they are not struggling! Be creative and get down with them so they have something to look at! By the time they are 6-8 weeks (NOT 6-8 months like I say in the video opps!) they should be doing 20 minutes a day! BUT it is all about FREQUENCY NOT DURATION! This is NOT 20 minutes at one time. This is all the 30 seconds, 1 minutes that you have been doing through out the whole day added up to 20 minutes! Roll them to their tummy, play on their tummy for a minute or 2, roll them off when they get fussy. When they are happy again, roll them back to their tummy once more. Tummy time is important because it builds the foundation for head control but also for our fine motor skills as well, like hand writing, cutting and feeding. We also learn to move whilst on our tummy. We learn cause and effect, weight shifts, and independent movement. These are important skills to learn for crawling and walking. Again, tummy time is our foundation work that we need for future development. If your baby still struggles with Tummy time or you are concerned about their gross motor development, feel free to book an appointment with me.

Is my baby behind in their gross motor skills? We all want our babies to develop with their peers but each baby develops at their own rate! Below you will find a chart with the AVERAGE age range of children achieving certain milestones. The best thing to remember is that it is a range and not a single day or month! As you can see it is typical from children to learn to walk independently any where from 9 months to 18 months! That is a huge time range! Here are some things to... look for when your baby is playing. Are they using both their arms/legs equally? Do they look/roll to both sides? Are they interested in moving and exploring toys and the world around them. These items are just as important as the check mark that they ARE rolling or sitting. Why does everyone recommend putting my baby on the floor?! The floor is the best place for your baby to explore their body in space! At the very beginning, this is on their back, but with in a few weeks to a month they should be able to tolerate a few minutes on their tummy. When they are on the floor, your baby is getting direct feedback about how their body works without restricts of plastic, material or another human body. They learn if they kick their whole body moves, t...hey discover their hands are apart of their body and so are their feet! They learn when they move their head a certain way that their whole body comes with it! So lie down a blanket, get down on the floor and enjoy watching your baby discover how their body works! What equipment should I buy for my new baby? This is a hot topic and an expensive one! There are so many new toys to buy for babies! But do you need them all? Each baby and family unit will have different needs so as a family make the decision around having balance for everyone! ... The only equipment I ever used with my children and what I recommended is a soft sling back chair. These now come with vibration, music, rocking, the works! The reason this chair is good for infants, is it allows them to be supported in a somewhat upright position with their shoulder blades supported so that they can bring their hands together. It also allows you to interact with them whilst you have both hands free to do some other chores! It is a safe and supportive alternative to your arms or the floor. Lets talk Torticollis! What is it? A shortening of the Sternocleidomastoid mucsle. (SCM) I like to call it our "picture" taking muscle. It is the muscle that allows our head to rotate to one side and tilt to the opposite...that perfect position that photographers use to put us in for school pictures. Why does it happen? There are various reasons. Could be due to a strain during delivery, position in the womb or in infancy.... Is it serious? If left untreated other complications begin to arise around this problem such as Plagiocephaly (head misshaping) and favouring of one side over the other to just name a few. How do I know if my baby has Torticollis? If your baby tends to look one way majority of the time and can't seem to look both ways AND/OR their head seems to be tilted to the same side day after day. If their head is flatter on one side at the back, you should have Torticollis ruled out as well. Is it treatable? YES! A paediatric physiotherapist can assess and treat torticollis. They will look at your child's active and passive range of motion in their neck and how they hold their head. They will look at the shape of your child's head and facial features. They will also do a gross motor assessment looking for symmetry and quality of movement. Treatment is individually assigned but usually consists of passive stretches, positioning changes and gross motor facilitation. How long does it take to treat Torticollis? This completely depends on the severity, the age of the child and the input of the family. If you have concerns contact a Paediatric Physiotherapist. You can find me at Rebirth Wellness Centre on Tuesday and Thursday mornings if you have questions. Disclaimer: this information is for educational use only and not to be used for diagnosing or treatment. If you have a concern please contact a health care professional.

Make sure you do tummy! New mama’s have so much to worry about and then there is tummy time too! But nowhere does it say HOW to start tummy time. I hear many mama’s say I just lay them on their tummy and many times they don’t like it! ... Set your little one up for success with this little tip. Tuck their arms underneath their chest. This brings everything into the centre and allows them to PUSH off the surface. This pushing is what activates their muscles in their back that connects to their shoulder girdle! The first building block for head control! And they start activating this muscle in the first 3 days! It does NOT have to always be in the floor! This can be on your chest when you are lying flat, reclining, even sitting upright. If their arms are under their chest and they are pushing off the surface.. it counts! Tummy time does not have to be long either.. a minute or two is fine to start - it is the FREQUENCY that matters. Offer your little one time in this position many times throughout the day! The length of time will increase as they get stronger! Disclaimer: This information should not be taken over a professional recommendation . If you have concerns over your child’sdevelopment, seek medical help.

OH the EXERSAUCER! Here is a beautifully written post by an OT about the Exersaucer. She lays out exactly what I say to parents when they ask me about this piece of equipment. The short of it: 1. Don't place any baby in equipment (exersaucers, bumbos, jolly jumpers, walkers if you are in a country they are available ) before they can sit independently. Allow their back muscles to develop before putting them in this equipment.... 2. Sometimes you need a "safe" place to but your baby. Only use equipment for 15 minutes a day....that is all equipment added up together!! 3. The best place for your baby to develop their skills is on the floor. http://mamaot.com/exersaucers-the-good-the-bad-the-better/ Disclaimer: this is an information only post. But WHY is tummy time so important? Why should I do it? Rachel ( a Paediatric Occupational therapist) breaks tummy time down beautifully in this post and describes why it is so important. It is not just about building neck muscles...it is laying down the building blocks that all other muscles and systems build on. http://www.candokiddo.com/news/tummy-time-milestones...
