BENTLEY update! Bentley the 2.5 year old sheepadoodle, has been learning that he is NOT the boss He was very much a spoiled dog, that just got used to ALWAYS getting his way. He used his size and weight to his advantage, by pulling his mom around (especially on walks). He would blow off his commands, whine, bark, jump up, and be pushy because he knew he would get away with it!... Once Bentley arrived, he started to be held accountable for his actions. He very quickly learned that I was the leader, and that I wasn’t going to let a lot of things fly! It was if a switch flipped in him, where he suddenly was on board with training. He started shaping up, following my commands and that’s when the real progress started! It has been so rewarding (and interesting) to watch him go through this change of mindset with me. A lot of his pushy behaviors stopped and we are finally seeing results. Over the next week and bit, we will be working on nail clipping, so that his mom can safely clip his nails at home. NITRO update! Nitro is a 10-month old German shepherd X Lab and is easily the MOST excitable dog I have ever worked with! He has been a challenge in the best way possible! His family came for a mid session this past weekend and he blew them away (although I am not surprised). ;)... Nitro came to me with already very solid obedience commands. While he knew his commands, he was far too excited to listen. Just because a dog knows their sit and down commands, doesn’t mean they are a well-trained dog. In this case, Nitro was too excited by his environment and various distractions, that he might as well not have known his commands. But that is why he is here! We are working very hard at teaching him to slow his mind. He has been doing a lot of calm crating and place work, and anything that instills calmness. Nitro is learning how to be calm in public and around people and dogs. He still has one more week with us, where he will be practicing solidifying his recall skills (on his first hike too). We have some very tough news to share with you today. Some of you may remember NIKE, the German Shepherd, Husky mix with a bite history that I had in my care for just about one year back in 2019-2020. He was adopted out, but last month it was brought to my attention that he was being starved, neglected and was always left unattended with the other dog he lived with, which led to an emergency rescue. He has unfortunately been let down by humans, once again, and the incredib...ly tough decision was made to put him to rest this past Thursday He had an amazing last few weeks with his family with lots of food, water, shelter, unconditional love and comfort <3 Nike’s story is a very long and sad one, especially for a dog who was only 5 years old! Nike has been through hell and back to say the least, although he did have many miracles in his lifetime, this poor guy deserved true peace This is very tough news to hear and our hearts go out to Nike’s family. They truly saved this boy’s life many times and showed him what love truly is. They exhausted all options, they spent over $10,000 in training, went above and beyond for this boy, but he was still just too tough a dog for this time in life I respect their incredibly hard, but responsible decision. Izzy the 1 year old collie/retriever/sheltie pup came for a day of daycare today! This adorable girl is very nervous of life, she's a rescue from Mexico so her past is unknown, but she's definitely making progress! She's very nervous of new people and until today, only her mom and dad have been able to touch her! Izzy and her family started 1 on 1 training sessions with me last year JUST before the lockdown! They have been coming back ever since and have been absolutely th...riving! This brave girl is able to pass by dogs on walks and coexist with them out in the yard without turning into a screaming Tasmanian Devil. She was even rushed at today by a puppy and she totally kept her cool! Izzy is working really hard on being more comfortable around people, and as long as they leave her be and don't push her, she's okay! Harper update! Harper the 18-month old labradoodle has been here for a little over a week and is working hard! She is a nervous and timid girl and we are working on calmly walking by other reactive or high energy dogs. She does really well with other low energy dogs! Confidence building has been doing wonders for her.... Her recall is coming along really well, place work is down pat and her eye contact and focus are strong. @skye.thegsd is back, and he is here for a few hours of structured day care! **Structured meaning the dog’s activities throughout the day are controlled. They are held accountable in following a consistent routine while they are here. It is NOT free time for them.** Skye is here to slowly begin proper dog socialization. This is a perfect opportunity to practice being around other dogs, without playing or interacting with them. Skye fixates on other dogs so we are teaching him... how to stay neutral, while other dogs are in the same space. He will practice calm crating with other dogs in the same room, so he can begin to learn how to co-exist with other dogs! Reminder that we DO offer structured day care for our training clients. The reason it is not available for the general public, is out of respect for the training dogs that are boarding here (also due to the lack of space). I wouldn’t want to set back the training dogs or jeopardize their progress. Jack the super cute 1 year old Shepherd mix is here for his 3 week board and train!!! This crazy, young pup is in some serious need of some manners!! His nickname is "Tigger" because he's so bouncy, happy and full of life! As funny as it may sound, Jack is a big boy and can easily hurt someone unintentionally by jumping up on them!... Jack is going to learn so much while he's here for his training! ROLO the 10 month old fluffy Bernedoodle puppy is here for his 3 week board and train program!! This adorable gentle giant is here for some basic manners, leash walking skills and off leash recall work!! (He has his own Instagram page you can follow and see all his his silly/bad behaviours he got away with before coming here ) @rolo_thebernedoodle Rolo's family has definitely put in a lot of work with him, and he definitely knows all of his commands. The only thing is, h...e only likes to do them when he feels like it and for as long as he feels like doing it for. During his time here, Rolo will be working on solidifying all of his commands and also focusing on duration work eith and without distractions! We will be working on walking nicely with his handler, both on and off leash. Rolo will be having a lot of fun with other dogs, especially when we go for hikes to practice recall! Lastly, he has started to show some attitude towards his family while they attempt to brush him or deal with his paws. Rolo is a big FLOOFY dog that will need to be brushed daily, so that will be one of our main issues to address immediately too! We have lots of work to do, but this guy is a lot of fun, loves to work and also tired out really easily! We will have a blast! THRASOS is here for his 4 week board and train program! Thrasos is a 4 year old Doberman mix who's a VERY anxious boy, his mind is constantly racing so our main goal is to slow his mind down!! Thrasos has a handful of issues that will be addressed during his time here training here with us. His family has already done so much work with him so far and does it ever show!! He's quite good with his commands and focus work, but he's very selective when he wants to listen and he ...doesn't hold a command for long. Thrasos is a very anxious dog who lacks confidence and he also tries to rule the house which is definitely a recipe for disaster. He reacts to anyone new, especially if they're coming into his home/space. He does have some separation anxiety which makes crating him and leaving the house a challenge. He loves to pull and lead you on walks, his recall is non existent and he also loves to bark back at animals on TV We definitely have a lot of work ahead of us, good thing we have 1 whole month together!! :) It will be a long, slow process, but the end results will be so rewarding and not to mention Thrasos will be in a much healthier state of mind and start enjoying life instead of worrying about everything. This boy is very happy, loves to please and is super food motivated. I know we can do this! Floyd has gone home from his 4 week board and train program!!! Floyd was definitely ready to go home and start living his best life with his family!! Floyd is now walking like a dream past all dogs, big and small, reactive or not! He can walk past them in a perfect heel, even off leash! ... When Floyd first arrived here, he had already gone through a board and train program, but he started getting more and more reactive/aggressive towards other dogs that wasn't originally dealt with, so that got increasingly worse. Floyd also had decided he was the boss of the house and he would make the rules (with that cute face I don't blame his family for falling for his trap) but nonetheless, he wasn't making great decisions, rules the house and was becoming too much to handle on walks if other dog's were nearby. We applaud Floyd's family so much for reaching out for help, and doing what's best for both them and Floyd! When Floyd was here, he was reminded that he wasn't the boss of the house. He still had rules and expectations and I held him accountable to that. He knew all of his commands well, but he decided for himself when he was done with them, instead of waiting for his release word. This rockstar learned that he wasn't the boss, he didn't need to constantly worry about other dogs on the walk, he learned to trust me, understood that I was in charge and that I always will advocate for his space. Once he understood that, he had nothing to worry about on his walks and they became much more enjoyable! His family still has work to do with him now that he's back home, but I know they're dedicated and have been doing their homework! They want what's best for Floyd and are willing to make the changes needed to help him succeed! Congratulations Floyd and family! Toby has gone home from his 4 week board and train program!!! As one last act of defiance, he refused to look at the camera for his go home picture These last 4 weeks with Toby has been a bit of a roller coaster to say the least Toby, was by far my most stubborn case! He was VERY set in his ways and liked to challenge everything I asked him to do! ... When that stopped working, he would then try to play the "poor me" attitude with me and once that didn't work, he was right on board and actually ended up having fun! ;) Toby came here knowing all of his commands, but with his very selective listening skills, he only did what he wanted when he wanted to do them and not when he was told to. He was a big bully to his family, he pushed them around, did what he wanted, was super reactive to other dogs on leash and overall, he decided that he was the boss. Since being here, Toby has learned his place in the world, Toby has had new rules, structure, boundaries, leadership and I've been holding him accountable for his actions. He now knows and listens to all of his commands the first time he's asked, he walks like a dream past all dogs and the best part of all, he has off leash reliability!! He has definitely earned his off leash time with me, and his family knows that he can do it. They know that they have a lot of work to do with him back home before he can have all that fun stuff too, but his family is right on board with his training, and wants what's best for him! We can't wait to hear more updates on Toby and Pongo too!
