Prolonged avoidance of movement after an injury can prolong your recovery. After an injury to the body, we typically will experience pain. Pain is protective in the beginning.... It’s trying to help us by communicating that something is wrong and gets us to take notice so that we can avoid certain threatening movements. This will mobilize us to take care of what we are feeling so that we can ultimately get back to health. When injuries persist, most people avoid physical activities, which can prolong pain and lead to de-conditioning. The more de-conditioned you become, the easier it is to re-aggravate your pain, which can ultimately lead to fear of movement. When we fear movement, it can limit meaningful activities, which can start affecting our mood, our relationships with those around us, and our ability to find joy. If you have been dealing with nagging pain that has limited meaningful activities in your life, you should come in and get assessed by one of our Chiropractors. Ever wonder why joint pain seems to flare up when the weather changes? Over the years there have been many studies done on the relationship between joint pain and weather. Although there is some evidence to suggest the connection, scientists are still not completely clear on why this happens.... One theory is that people with joint pain, especially arthritis, may be sensitive to changes in barometric pressure. When the cartilage that cushions the bones inside a joint is worn away, nerves in the exposed bones might pick up on changes in pressure. Some people’s bodies may just be more sensitive to changes in the weather. Many people say they find relief in warmer climates, but again, there’s no scientific proof that it will ease your aches But even though the science isn’t clear, flare-ups when the weather turns are very real for many people with joint pain. If you experience weather related flare ups, make sure to: Stay warm: take a hot bath, curl up under a blanket, dress in layers, use a heating pad. Stay heathy: make sure to exercise regularly with activities that are gently on the joints, like yoga or swimming. Also consider a good nutrition and proper sleep. The invigorating cold air can clear your mind and reduce stress, which can be helpful for weight loss. If you want to maintain your physical endurance despite the icy weather and gym shut downs due to Covid, gear up and head outside. Just remember the following: Wear the proper attire: high-tech synthetic fabrics are the way to go to keep you warm and use multiple layers. Choose wooly socks instead of cotton and dress in layers. Slow and steady: once you get a good walking rhythm, gradually increase the tempo so that you are walking at a pace that is fast enough to make it difficult to sing but not fast enough that you cannot talk. We got a little taste of winter this morning with a light dusting of snow. This is the time to slow things down a bit and be mindful of how you move. When the seasons change, the demands on our bodies also change. If you are recovering from an injury or are performing new activities (ie. You may notice that eating unhealthy, processed foods can increase inflammation in the body. This is particularly true around the holidays, when we typically binge eat our favorite comfort foods as we celebrate the festivities. Our Naturopath Dr. Hrkal shared some valuable information on how to promote gut health. ... Here are some of his insights 1 Avoid foods that promote inflammation: Eating processed foods (saturated fats in sandwich meats, processed burgers, refined sugar, hyper-processed grains etc.) increases inflammation that can penetrate into blood stream after consumption. 2 Avoid food allergens that promote inflammation: I have already shared many recent posts on this topic. Go back and check them out. Get tested, avoid those foods and reduce the triggering of your immune system to creating allergic inflammation. 3 Build gut lining so it doesn’t become leaky or hyper permeable: 1. Avoid food allergies 2. Wheat/gluten/gliadin cause leaky gut 3. Zinc, omega 3, vitamin D promote healing gut lining 4. Glutamine fuels your intestinal lining cells 5.
