Took some time today to go fix up and repair one of the murals in Downtown Oshawa that was recently vandalized over the past few months. It wasnt an easy task but we wanted to help do our part in keeping the community clean. Spent some money on paint and brushes and got to work. The more mainstream graffiti art becomes, the more I feel the need to remind the general public of the history it has. I run a graffiti mural company and I try to help out as many youth oriented and community groups as I can. I want you to remember that the same guy, they have teaching graffiti in schools or keynote speaking to audiences is the same guy that used to get put into jail for graffiti. Times sure have changed! In these photos I was arrested for painting what is no...w known as "Graffiti Alley" in Toronto. This alley won a tourism award presented by the city the past year for the amount of money and tourism it attracts from around the world. If you were caught painting there 15 years ago you would be arrested and charged. They sent me to Don Jail for this and I spent a week in custody with some pretty awful people who committed far worse crimes. This caused a chain of events that kept me from getting a good job and created a dark cloud over my progression as a teen. At the time it didnt seem like much, but as I grew older I watched many doors close and many backs turned when I applied or reached out for help. It wasnt until I had my daughter when I realized I really needed to make a change in my life. Thats when I decided I would finally "sell out" and make money doing what I loved to do for free. The paint factory was created out of survival to feed my family. Whenever I achieve a new plateau of success, I always give back to the graffiti artists by creating events, legal spaces, or mentor a younger writer. Everyone loves "PRETTY" graffiti but no one thinks about the journey it takes a young graffiti artist to get good. You are considered untalented until you are good enough for general public to accept you. Talk about trauma. Talent takes time to perfect. It took a long time to realize I had more to offer and I could make changes around me.. once I figured this out, I never looked back. Heres a fun one we did for Bowmanville High School in the cafeteria a little while back. One of the students applied for a grant to win money for a mural in the school and she wanted to use a graffiti artist. They called us and we came and have a great in class discussion about the process and content and the students chose all the words that best represented their school. It was a pleasure working with all the students and staff. Were glad we could help being a little colour... to the school walls!
