The International Day of Solidarity With The Palestinian People, Nov 29 The date of 29 November is observed as the International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People since 1978. This date, which was chosen because of its meaning and significance to the Palestinian people, is based on the call by the United Nations General Assembly for an annual observance of the resolution on the partition of Palestine. What has become known as the Partition Plan or the R...esolution 181 (II), intended to establish an Arab State and a Jewish State, and was adopted on 29 November 1947. The International Day of Solidarity traditionally provides an opportunity for the international community to focus its attention on the fact that the question of Palestine remains unresolved and that the Palestinian people have yet to attain their inalienable rights as defined by the General Assembly, namely, the right to self-determination without external interference, the right to national independence and sovereignty, and the right to return to their homes and property, from which they have been displaced. - UNESCO Today is just another day closer to the liberation of Palestine. In honour of Breast Cancer Awareness. Last month, Artist Kholoud Al-Dasouki graffitied a wall in Gaza City with the Arabic saying We love you, fight cancer with will. Breast Cancer Awareness Month is a crucial time to educate people about the importance of early screening and treatment.... It’s also a time to reflect on the privileges we have such as a fully public health care system, where all people receive the care they need when they need it not just those who can pay for it. Unfortunately, due to the Israeli siege on the Gaza Strip for the past 14 years, many Palestinians who battle this horrible disease have died waiting for their permits to leave the strip to get medical attention. Gaza is home to approximately two million people and breast cancer was the third largest cause of cancer mortality in 2018 in the oPt at 12%, after lung cancer (20%) and colon cancer (13%). There have been increasing restrictions on medical exit permits by Israel, with the World Health Organisation (WHO) documenting that there was a 180% increase in the number of medical exit permits denied by Israeli authorities in 2018 compared to 2017. To our cancer survivors and those who are battling it, we say We love you, fight cancer with will. See more

The city of Jaffa (), one of civilization’s oldest meeting points. The name Jaffa has preserved its meaning over time, as it is a Canaanite name that means beautiful or beautiful scenery, and most of the city’s names through the ages have carried the same meaning, which is the meaning of beauty. Religious historians claim that it was named after ‘Yaffat’, Prophet Noah’s son, who built the city after The Great Flood. As for the oldest record of the name Jaffa, it w...as in the hieroglyphic language, which dates back to the reign of Pharaoh Thutmose III. Before the Nakba, Jaffa was considered the cultural capital of Palestine, as it contained the most important Palestinian daily newspapers and tens of magazines and publishing houses, in addition to the most important and beautiful cinemas, theaters and cultural clubs in Palestine. Moreover, Jaffa was considered the beating heart of Palestine in economic terms. Since the beginning of the nineteenth century, a new economic field developed in Jaffa, which placed Jaffa in a prominent position in the global economic market. This field consisted of growing citrus groves & oranges. The development of this economic field was very rapid, reaching tens of millions of boxes of citrus exports annually in the 1930s. This provided thousands of jobs and investment opportunities annually, which led to linking Jaffa with the most important economic centers at the time at the level of the Mediterranean and Europe. The occupation of Jaffa occurred on April 26, 1948. It resulted in the displacement of most of the city's Palestinian population, which today constitutes 15% of the global Palestinian refugee population - approximately 472,000 refugees. In 1950 the municipality of Tel Aviv annexed the city of Jaffa to its authority, and it became a single municipality called the municipality of Tel Aviv-Jaffa. In which, the city became Judaized, its streets were renamed with the names of the leaders of the Zionist movement or names that were foreign. None had any connection with it or its ancient Arab history. The city’s indigenous people were expelled and was resettled with Israeli settlers. See more

The Artist, Nabil Anani Nabil Anani considered the founding father of the contemporary Palestinian art movement, was born in Hebron, Palestine in 1943. He studied Fine Art at Alexandria University, Egypt, in 1969, and on his return to Palestine, he began a career as an artist and an art teacher-trainer at the UN college in Ramallah. ... Anani's drawings suggest an eternal present, a time of immortal beauty. The olive fields he paints are pure drawing lessons. His paintings are like fossils in memory; a site memory intertwined with human memory, together forming a fossil memory in time. That is what made him stand out at the forefront of the painters who painted the popular heritage in all its vocabulary in a manner that gives the document aesthetic character. Art was an attempt to survive, resist and conquer. In his childhood, he made paths to an imagined city in which he was driving his wire cart, his first sculpture. As he grew older he realized that this maze was his prophecy. As the artist, he had to invent imaginary paths that would take him to his homeland, which still resides on his occupied land. This feature strengthened his power to defend his existence and torment him at the same time, as it was the compass that led him to the outside world. Outside of his tormented soul with the beauty of the world, the beauty which will not be able to wait for him to finish his duty. He paints, inspired by his childhood, which he left without it ever leaving him. He paints as if everything around him has become extinct. See more

Today marks the 38th anniversary of the bloody massacre of the Palestinian Sabra & Shatila refugee camps in Beirut, Lebanon. Up to 3500, mostly civilians were killed by Christian extremist militias in cooperation with the Israeli army and then minister of defence, Ariel Sharon. We will never forget nor forgive the Sabra & Shatila massacre. ... #Historical Background On September 16, 1982, following the Israeli invasion of Lebanon, the right-wing Christian Phalange militia stormed the Sabra and Shatila refugee camps in West Beirut and began a massacre that ended in the deaths of hundreds, maybe thousands, of mostly Palestinian civilians. Israel's invasion began on June 6, 1982. After much destruction, the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO), which had defended the camps since its inception, agreed to leave Lebanon in August. They were given American assurances that civilians left behind would be protected. The president-elect of Lebanon, and the leader of the Phalange, was assassinated on September 14th. The Israeli army proceeded to invade and occupy West Beirut.Israeli troops surrounded the camps to prevent the refugees from leaving and allowed entry of the Phalange, a known enemy of the Palestinians. The Israelis fired flares throughout the night to light up the killing field - thus allowing the militiamen to see their way through the narrow alleys of the camps. The #massacre went on for two days. As the bloodbath concluded, Israel supplied the bulldozers to dig mass graves. The massacre at Sabra and Shatila was a direct consequence of Israel's violation of the American-brokered ceasefire and the impunity bestowed on Israel by the #US and the international community. This tragic anniversary is a reminder that the international community continues to fail to hold Israel accountable for its violations of international law and to defend the basic human rights of the Palestinian people. The Life & Martyrdom of The Great Palestinian Artist, Naji Al-Ali Naji Suleiman Hussein Al-Ali, born in 1937 from the village of Al-Shajarah, located between the Palestinian cities of Tiberias and Nazareth, lived there for 11 years. As the Nakba occurred in 1948, Naji & his family were displaced towards Ain Al-Hilweh Camp in southern Lebanon, which was the reason for highlighting Al-Ali's artistic talent. Throughout his life, Naji Al-Ali drew more than 40,000 carto...ons, his themes articulated from the suffering and concerns of the Palestinian people and the prevailing political situation in the Arab world. In it, he reflected the people's criticism of the Arab and Palestinian governments and leaderships, drawing many satirical cartoons of Arab commanders and leaders. Among the thousands of cartoons, the character "Handala", drawn by Naji Al-Ali in 1969, emerged as a national symbol among the Palestinian people. Handala, a ten-year-old child turning his back and holding his hands behind his back, became Naji Al-Ali's signature. Handala was a representation of Naji Al-Ali when he was forced to leave his homeland. He will only grow up when he returns to his homeland, and he represents the poor because of his poor, torn clothes and the soles of his feet. - Naji Al-Ali, on Handala. Naji’s Martyrdom At the beginning of the first Palestinian intifada, while Naji Al-Ali was on his way to his workplace for Al-Qabas International newspaper, on July 22, 1987, an unknown thug shot him under his right eye, this led Naji to be in a coma till August 29, when he passed away, leaving behind his wife Wadad Saleh Nasr, from the Palestinian town of Saffuriyya, and his four children, Khaled, Osama, Layal and Judy. @ Ottawa, Ontario See more

The Iraqi Cemetery in Nablus, Palestine In one corner of the old Askar camp, to the east of Nablus is the Iraqi army martyrs' cemetery, which includes 194 Iraqi soldiers who came with the Arab Salvation Army during the 1948 Catastrophe and were martyred trying to liberate Palestine. Thus, they were buried in the city, they fought to protect. The graves are taken care of by the Palestinian families that reside near them. Every Friday & Sunday, after Juma’a & m...ass prayer, worshippers pass by to pray for their Iraqi brothers’ souls and in some cases clean their gravestone & decorate them with flowers. History The Iraqi army fought several battles during the 1948 Catastrophe war, the most important of which was the Battle of Jenin, during which it liberated the city, and expelled the Zionist organizations from it, headed by the "Haganah" organization, and it remained liberated until The Naksa - Setback in 1967. Some sources also mentioned that the Iraqi army was close to liberating the city of Haifa after they besieged it, but its progress stopped after the political leadership in Baghdad refused to give them orders to march and liberate more land, and this, in turn, led to the confusion of the army and its retreat. It is with sad news that we announce the death of The Palestinian poet Harun Hashim Rashid, who passed away yesterday in Ontario, Mississauga-Canada . May he Rest In Peace Born in Gaza in 1927, poet Harun Hashim Rasheed witnessed, as a child, British soldiers demolishing his and his neighbors’ homes in reprisal against Palestinian rebels, an incident which left a deep mark on him as a poet. After obtaining a Higher Teacher Training Diploma from Gaza College, he worke...d as a teacher until 1954. He then became director of Sawt al-Arab broadcasting station in the district of Gaza. After the fall of Gaza to the Israelis in 1967, he was harassed by the Israeli occupation and was eventually compelled to leave the region. His poetry is among those contemporary writings most committed to the Palestinian cause; he describes in his simple, direct, balanced, and highly expressive verse the plight of Palestinians uprooted from their homes, their inner torment, and the deep feelings of loss and alienation that they have known throughout the years. The appearance in 1954 of his first collection, With the Strangers, was a great event in the history of Palestinian poetry, as he was perhaps the first poet to address himself to the question of the physical and spiritual alienation of the Palestinians. Since then he has published sixteen other collections, the most recent of which, The Rebellion of Stone, appeared in 1988. Rasheed has also written plays, a novel, Years of the Suffering (1971), and several studies on poetry and politics. We ask our Muslim followers to recite Al Fatiha on his soul. Palestinian Sisterhood -@imaginingtheholy @tatreezandtea ... Palestinian Tatreez Embroidery is a centuries-old folk art, traditionally passed from mother to daughter over a cup of tea. The traditional Palestinian embroidered dress, also known as the thobe, has traceable origins from the beginning of the sixteenth century and the tatreez, or embroidery, has an iconographical and symbolic significance that ultimately date back to Chinese symbols found around 5,000 BC. The motion of embroidering the cross-stitch pulling the threaded needle through the fabric in a meditative repetition summons a powerful legacy of all Palestinian women who once did the same. When Palestinians embroider, they are instantly transported through time, place and space to a simple, peaceful moment of creation and craft. The Educational Post Harriet Tubman (1820-1913) Today’s educational post will be quite different. Instead of learning about Palestinian History, we are going to learn about Black History, specifically about Harriet Tubman. ... Born into slavery in Maryland, Harriet Tubman escaped to freedom in the North in 1849 to become the most famous "conductor" on the Underground Railroad. Between 1850 and 1860, Tubman made 19 trips from the South to the North following the network known as the Underground Railroad. She guided more than 300 people, including her parents and several siblings, from slavery to freedom, earning the nickname Moses for her leadership. Tubman first encountered the Underground Railroad when she used it to escape slavery herself in 1849. Following a bout of illness and the death of her capturer, Tubman decided to escape slavery in Maryland for Philadelphia. She crossed into the free state of Pennsylvania with a feeling of relief and awe, and recalled later: When I found I had crossed that line, I looked at my hands to see if I was the same person. There was such a glory over everything; the sun came like gold through the trees, and over the fields, and I felt like I was in Heaven. Rather than remaining in the safety of the North, Tubman made it her mission to rescue her family and others living in slavery via the Underground Railroad. #BlackLivesMatter #BlackHistory @ Ottawa, Ontario See more

The Educational Post The Deir Yasin Massacre (DYM) Part 3/4 In addition to those butchered in their homes, 25 Palestinian men were rounded up by the Zionist terrorists, loaded onto a truck and paraded through Jerusalem in a sort of victory tour before being executed at a nearby quarry and buried in a mass grave. Also, eye witnesses reported that around 150 women and children were paraded naked through the Jewish neighbourhoods of Jerusalem. ... The marauders gathered the women and girls who were still alive, and after removing all their clothes, put them in open cars, driving them naked through the streets of the Jewish section of Jerusalem, where they were subjected to the mockery and insult of the onlookers. Many took photographs of those women. 55 children who survived the massacre were left at the Mendelbaum gate. 6 of these orphans went knocking on the door of Palestinian Jerusalemite Hind Al-Husseini seeking shelter. After hearing about the massacre, Al-Husseini went searching for the other children and after finding them decided to take care of them all. Her family gave her the mansion of her grandfather Dar Al-Husseini (the Husseini house) where she was born and which she renamed into Dar Al-Tifl Al-Arabi (Home of the Arab Child). Hind Al-Husseini dedicated her whole life to the orphans of Deir Yasin and other Palestinian children. The atrocities committed at Deir Yasin were used to force residents of other Palestinian villages to flee for their lives out of fear of a similar destiny. After the massacre, Zionist terrorist gangs went from one Palestinian village to another, ordering Palestinians to leave or meet the fate of Dayr Yassin. They would warn the residents in loud speakers: The Jericho road is still open, fly from Jerusalem before you are killed, like those in Deir Yassin. During the expulsion of the inhabitants of Ramleh and Lydd in July 1948, Sari Nair from Ramleh recalled how they were kicked out of their home by a Zionist soldier who told them to leave Otherwise you know what will happen. What happen at Deir Yassin will happen to you. See more

The Educational Post The Deir Yasin Massacre (DYM) Part 1/4 DYM is considered as one of the worst Zionist massacres committed against Palestinians. Deir Yassin, a Palestinian village located on the outskirts of Jerusalem, had a population of around 750 on the eve of 09/04/1948. The village was surrounded by 6 Zionist colonies, who blocked the main access road connecting Deir Yasin with Jerusalem, placing Deir Yasin under an almost total blockade. To protect the... village from the attacks of the Zionists, the villagers of Deir Yasin formed a local guard whose weaponry consisted only of a few old rifles and very little ammunition. Nevertheless, on 09/04/1948, and in a joint operation coded Operation Unity, the three terrorist gangs Irgun, Lehi (Stern) and Haganah (now known as IDF), attacked the peaceful village with the aim of killing as many Palestinians as possible. At 4:30 Friday morning, while the villagers slept, the Zionist terror gangs surrounded Deir Yasin & attacked them. The Irgun attacked the village from the southeast, and Stern attacked it from the east while the Haganah bombarded the village with mortars. The Palestinian village guards tried to protect the residents and to stop the Zionist gangs, but due to their old weaponry, they had little chance against three fully armed terror gangs. The Zionists opened fire at whoever tried escape the village, and then moved into the village and started their clean up: they moved from one house to another raping women, slaughtering children and killing whoever was inside with machine guns and knives. Whole families were lined up against the wall and executed. Pregnant women were bayoneted, and the bodies of children were mutilated. Money and jewellery were snatched from the bodies of victims, and other personal belongings were stolen before houses were burnt. See more

The Educational Post Palestinian Women Headwear The mystery of a Palestinian woman's headwear is the beauty of its shape, the diversity of its qualities, the intensity of its embroidery, and its great cost. There are approximately four types of headwear: ... (1-pic 2) Al-Shatwa(): It concerns #Bethlehem * only, and it is cylindrical in shape, long, but it is not pointed or fine-headed. Shatwa is a long turban, or perhaps it is the development of the tip-waving or triangular phase, which was worn in 14 AD #Egypt. Shatwa in the early part of this century was shorter than it is now, and on top was a row of dirhams, and on top of it the second row of coral. In the 1920s, the length increased and became five rows of silver and gold coins. The embroidery on the shatwa is sown accurately with a square rag of white silk placed on the shatwa, known as the squared (). (2-pic 3,4,5) Taftaf (): It reaches behind the ears and is made up of two rows of coins. Behind the head, 4 coins are placed larger than those placed in the front. It is usually worn by the women of #Hebron, #Jerusalem and #Jaffa. (3-pic 6) Al Waqqa (): Perhaps a distortion of the word "", meaning what remains of the head. It is also known as the adjective for which it describes the coin, and its number may sometimes exceed eighty pieces. In the Ottoman era, #Ramallah women wore 10 silver coins or half of that. As for affordable women, they put 10 gold coins or 5 gold coins. This money was considered to be the woman's share of dowry (), and she had the right to dispose of it as she pleased. Al Waqqa was for the women and chieftains of Ramallah, and it was worn as a circle in the form of a roll, stuffed with a soft cloth that encircles the head to the end of the neck, where it was connected to a roll of coins. (4-pic 7,8,9,10) Al Hatta and Asbah ( ) Worn by women in northern #Palestine was a cloth placed on the head, where a cotton band which come in different designs, would be placed on top of it to hold its place. Coins would sometimes be placed on the Asbah depending on the status of the woman. @ Ottawa, Ontario See more

The Educational Post Geography & Biology (1-3) The Dead Sea, located between Jordan & Palestine, is known to be one of the lowest land point of earth. (1,412 feet below sea level) Fed by the Jordan River with no connection to the world's oceans, it is really more lake than sea, but because the fresh water feeding it soon evaporates, it has a salt concentration seven times greater than that of the ocean. Moreover, The Dead Sea has been a recreational and healin...g destination for millennia, with Herod the Great among the visitors seeking the health benefits of its waters and mud. Religion & History (4-6) In 1946, three Palestinian Shepherds (Muhammad, Jum’a & Khalil) came across ‘The Dead Sea Scrolls’ in a cave next to Qumran ( ). The scrolls contained hundreds of scriptures significant to both Christianity & Judaism. In total 7 scriptures were found, dating around 408 BCE - 318 CE. According to Islamic and biblical traditions, the Dead Sea is the site of the ancient city of Sodom, home of the Prophet Lut (). The people of Sodom were murderers, thieves, and individuals who openly practiced immoral sexual behavior. Prophet Lut tenaciously preached God's message, but to no avail; he found that even his own wife was one of the disbelievers. Thus, god ordered the prophet to leave with his followers and never look back, as he punished the people of sodom by turning the city upside down and raining on it brimstones covering it layer by layer.(Quran 11:82-83) In Judaism, according to the book of Genesis in the Bible, God exacted the same punishment on Sodom. The Angel Gabriel told Lot to leave the city with his wife and daughters, and warned them not to look back as they made their escape. Scripture says that as they left, Lot’s wife defied the instructions of the angel by looking back on the city, and she was immediately turned into a pillar of salt. Along the southern shore of the Dead Sea in al-Karak Governorate, Jordan, stands a tall sculpture made out of salt rocks. According to legend this is a statue of the Prophet Lot’s wife. @ Ottawa, Ontario
