Three more beauties coming off my @vashtigrinders Rift Edge. Amazing machine makes this all butter! First is a custom recurve with green micarta handle and 80crv2 steel. A beast! Second is a custom bushcrafter with Ironwood handles and a 1095 body. A hardened butt plate was welded to this one for striking. Custom sheath and matching for steel going to @threeravensbushcraft ! Final is a 5 inch warncliffe with a custom kydex sheath. These are the first three blades to come off my @vashtigrinders Rift! Control control control. It’s hard to put into words the difference between my older P272 by Vashti (which I LOVE) and the new Rift but I will try. Quieter. Smoother. More versatile. Easier. BETTER. Anyone who owns a big grinder knows you need to approach it with purpose and confidence. Grinding fearfully causes mistakes. That confidence not only comes from your skill and practice, but it also comes from y...our equipment. Maybe it’s me, but maybe it’s my machine. I find my grinds better. Thanks to Jo and his team for outstanding tools!! First knife is a bushcraft from 1095. There is a strike plate welded on to the butt end. Interesting concept and I am hopeful it proves useful to the customer. Second is a compact recurve beast from 3/16 80CRV2. For my own preference I steer clear of recurves as they are a pain to sharpen. That said, I do love how they look! Third is a compact little warncliffe made from hitachi white steel and stainless laminate. My take on a Serbian cleaver. This is a big knife. I didn’t have anything thick or wide enough to forge, so I made a billet of mild, nickel and a 80CRV2 core. Very happy with how it turned out, though forging it from 1 1/2 inches to 4 1/2 inches wide took some doing. Definitely a tough shape to forge! Handle is a nice dark piece of ironwood! I had to learn to use my @vashtigrinders 2x72 in a different way, as the scoop out of the heel kept getting in the way. This one is spoken for. Built an electro chemical etching machine for putting my mark on knives. I’m not an electrical guy by any means, but following along with @redbeardops on YouTube made this job simple. The hardest thing was waiting for all the components to arrive! One of the few projects where I didn’t actually use my @vashtigrinders 2x72. But I wanted to!!

Nakiri is ground and handle is fitted. Glue up is curing. Tomorrow I will etch it (first etch for my home built etching machine) and put the edge on it, though it already cuts. Tedious grinding on this to get it super thin, without overheating or over grinding. My trusty @vashtigrinders p272 keeps things cool and even. Dry fit for this Nakiri wa handle. Tedious tweaking until the blade fits and rests straight without cant or twist. Next up the handle will be made octagonal and shortened. These two are done , complete with nice leather pants. Top is W2 and ironwood. Full length sheath with retaining snap, rigged for a horizontal carry. Second is @50.50forge Mountain Mai in 1095. Sometime I think I am more of a custom mess maker than a custom knife maker. The first two are from my previous post, but this time they are wearing leather pants. Second two were forged out last night, ground and shape refined today, and are just waiting a trip to the 1480 degree sauna for some detox aka normalizing. First is a 9 inch classic with a nice dark ironwood handle. Hitachi white steel and stainless laminate. Second is a nessmuk design requested by the client. W2 with a wispy hamon. Handle is a stabilized and dyed burl. I can’t remember what it is, but it’s a beauty. For a twist, the thong tube is a carbon fibre hunting arrow cut off. Sheaths are drying and will ship out tomorrow! Two more blades annealing in the shop!

For some reason all of a sudden I am getting requests for nessmuk style knives. Here is the first of two, as well as a 9 inch classic model. Finally, a nitro v skeletonized knife that I am collaborating with @huntreadyab on! The nessmuk is differentially hardened W2, water dunk for the initial quench and then into oil for the remainder. Scared the crap out of me cuz it popped fiercely in the oil, but turns out it was only the clay chunk fracturing off. . Second is a classic... model in hitachi white steel and stainless laminate. Finally, the Nitro V knife we will be calling the ProGuide Summit. Designed to be a minimalist low maintenance knife, that doesn’t add precious weight to your pack when in the mountains. Chose nitro v for its extreme corrosion resistance, plus its based on AEBL, a well known and excellent cutlery steel. Finally, as always, grinding these knives out is made almost stress free on my Vashti P272 from @vashtigrinder. Having a well built and dependable machine which is by far the most used tool in my shop, has taken my designs and making to new levels. Almost nothing I won’t try with it. And the only thing better than their grinders, is there commitment to their customers. Second to none. @jcmckenna.bc is on my Christmas card list now!
