This is an educational post about parvovirus in dogs. There is a current outbreak of the virus in Grand Falls Windsor. This is not to create panic, but more to ...inform you of symptoms you should watch for, how it can be contracted and prevented. The parvovirus is a virus that attacks a dogs gastrointestinal tract. The typical presentation of a dog with parvo is inappetence, lethargy, vomiting and diarrhea (with or without blood). This can last for many days and can lead to death due to damage to the intestinal tract, dehydration, infection etc. As with any virus, all we can do is provide supportive care as the virus does it's thing and hope the dog is strong enough to fight it off and survive. The most susceptible to this virus are young dogs, although older dogs can also contract it as well, but they don't tend to do as poorly as younger dogs do. The good news is, there is a very effective vaccine against this horrible virus. The virus is transmitted through whats called "the fecal-oral route", aka through their feces. So if a dog sniffs a parvo positive dogs bum or feces, it can get it. If an owner of a parvo positive dog visits another home and the virus is on their shoes and dogs sniff their shoes, they can contract the virus. It is highly contagious. There is an easy test to test for parvovirus, but there is no point in testing your dog for parvo unless it is symptomatic (has vomiting and/or diarrhea). Parvo can take up to 14 days to become symptomatic and start shedding in their feces. The best approach to this virus is to vaccinate your pet. And if your pet is unvaccinated, avoid dogs of unknown health status while you're out walking your pet and don't allow them to sniff other dogs feces- and book an appointment to get them vaccinated ;) And as always, if you have any questions, feel free to contact your family veterinarian.
