Happy New Year from all of us at The Paper Place! What to say about 2020... to say it has been a hard year for the shop would be a wild understatement. In truth there were many many moments when I had decided this would be the month we would have to close for good like so many others along Queen St West. But then something would happen, sometimes it was as simple as a conversation with a customer about what this place means to them or a new massage therapist telling me it di...dn’t feel like Christmas to her until she saw the windows at The Paper Place from the streetcar, but whatever it was I decided to keep going. In the face of so much uncertainty and staggering financial losses, it was always the people that kept us here. In the midst of all this uncertainty, our lease came up for renegotiation - if you can imagine trying to make a decision like that this current climate?! I proposed a radical idea to our landlord of just a one year lease instead of five so we could both know better what the future had in store and he generously agreed. So we are here for one more year at least! I won’t lie, there are moments where I fear it was the worst mistake I have ever made and I will regret not bowing out at this moment but, perhaps I am a glutton for punishment, I’m not ready to throw in the towel just yet. So my plea to 2021 is to prove my doubts wrong, I believe this place has more life in it yet! And my wish for 2021 is more togetherness, more joy and a lot less fear. Never give up, for that is just the place and time that the tide will turn. Harriet Beecher Stow

When we found out about our Covid positive staff member on Saturday, our entire team was then required to self isolate for 14 days. They left the shop on Saturday leaving 470+ orders in some state of fulfillment. The truth is we were barely keeping up with the volume when we had a full staff on board, I know many of you small retailers doing curbside in the city can relate. The amount of work involved is staggering which I know it doesn’t seem like from the outside. Now we h...ave just a single person working who is not a staff member, trying to navigate hundreds of phone calls & pickups and a massive backlog of emails. It is a Herculean task as to answer almost any question they need to reach out to one of us for the answer. Believe me, we would like nothing more then to be at the shop and able to help out but that isn’t possible at this time. We ask for your patience and understanding while we try to navigate this. This year has thrown so many curve balls at this business and we honestly didn’t see this one coming. We are completely shut down for what would normally be our busiest two weeks of the year, revenue we desperately rely on to survive the quiet beginning months of the following year. So time will tell how we weather this storm. Rest assured if you have emailed or called and have not heard back, you will. It just may take a couple days but we are doing the very best we can under impossible circumstances. Take care

We have learned that one of our team members has tested positive for Covid19. As we are a small group, unfortunately, this means that we must all self isolate while we await test results. This team member has not been present at the store for several days and we are have all been following safe practices while we have been in the space together. We have closed our website for any incoming orders for the next week at least and have made arrangements to have the shop sanitized... today (Sunday, December 13th) so we will be closed for curbside pickups. We are bringing in a single staff member from outside the team to be there this Monday-Saturday for existing curbside pickups waiting to be collected and to fulfill the existing backlog of orders. Our curbside hours for next week will be reduced as we will be operating with a single staff member and will be as follows: Monday 11am-5pm Tuesday 11am-5pm Wednesday 11am-5pm Thursday 12-6pm Friday 12-6pm Saturday 11am-5pm As you can appreciate this news is devastating on both a personal and professional level and to have to close the shop during the busiest week of the year after everything that has already happened is unimaginable. We appreciate your patience and understanding during this incredibly difficult time and ask for your best wishes for the health and safety of our team member and those of us awaiting test results. Thank you

Every year I bring just one ornament home from the shop to add to my growing collection for our tree. This year it was this guy... it was the sweater that got me. This beauty and many other ornaments are available through our website for curbside pickup or to have shipped to you ... https://shop.thepaperplace.ca/collections/ornaments

Like many other businesses here in Toronto, today is our last day open as we head into another lockdown. I am working frantically to get as much of our stock online as I can and we will continue to offer curbside pickup and shipping through our website. If there is anything you are interested in that you don’t see online feel free to give us a call or email us and we can help you find and order what you are looking for. Unfortunately, it just won’t be possible for us to get... everything listed online in the next few weeks but we will do our very best! I keep seeing posts of Buy Local or Bye Local and Shop Small, Shop Local, Shop Early (Canada Post is warning of delays!) and they warm my heart. It doesn’t have to be us but whoever your favourite local shops are in the city, they really truly need your support right now if you are in a position to do so. A lot of us live off the revenue from November & December for the rest of the year so heading into this shutdown for the holiday season is scary business indeed. For many it will be the final straw or, if you are a Monty Python fan, the wafer-thin mint. Amazon will be fine. #shoplocal #shopsmall #toronto #thepaperplace

I’ve been working in stolen moments to get a selection of our holiday boxed & single cards up online as it is shaping up to be a different shopping experience this year for a lot of us. I stayed up late last night uploading these incredible Toronto themed cards from @madeinbv. Malika’s artwork captures the spirit of our lovely city and celebrates various landmarks & neigbourhoods. Shop her lovely cards and many others on our website for either curbside pickup or opt to have ...them shipped to you. #stationeryshop #holidaycards #toronto #thepaperplace

There is a lot of tension out there today as the world waits out the election results in the United States... so here is a tiny little moment of cheer and brightness while we bite our nails, a couple of my favourite Katazomes!
