Canadian Wheelchair Curling Championship Cancelled for Second Straight Year Is it the End of Wheelchair Curling in Canada? The Canadian Curling Association (C...CA) has announced the cancellation of the Canadian Wheelchair Curling Championship scheduled for March 2021 citing the current Covid 19 crisis as the reason. The 2020 Championship had been previously cancelled. There are those that believe this may be the end of competitive level wheelchair curling in Canada. A source that was previously a member of the National Wheelchair Curling Team Program has often stated that the sport was in trouble before the Covid 19 crisis. That source stated there were five factors contributing to the decline before Covid 19. (1) The current stock of competitive players is aging and there has been little recruitment of new persons to the sport. (2) Provincial Curling Associations have done little to recruit new players to any level of wheelchair curling and have no plans to do so. (3) Similarly, CCA itself has no plan for wheelchair curling. It has no communication plan for regularly updating current players on developments. There is no national advisory committee on wheelchair curling. (4) The general public and the current group of competitive wheelchair curling players know little of how the National Team is selected and this is this has eroded morale. (5) In some provinces, competitive teams appear to be unwilling to recruit new players to the sport in fear of competition at the provincial level. Since the Covid 19 crisis there has been a significant rule change in wheelchair curling in Canada that may further limit the sport. This rule change put in medical requirements of players that previously did not exist. This change made the sport segregated. Previously any person could wheelchair curl as long as they played in a wheelchair and obeyed the rules. This will limit small clubs in smaller population areas, some provinces and territories from having competitive teams. No plans are in place to mitigate this change. With no championships for two year and these other factors, the future may be quite dark for wheelchair curling on a competitive basis in Canada. Only time will tell! What do wheelchair curlers and others think of the current environment? Does the larger curling community and others have any views on the subject? Who will speak up and have solutions?
