We are not in this together. COVID-19 infection rates are about class, race and gender. The working class is being hit the hardest because the rich are pushing... for workplaces to be reopened. Workers on the frontlines (disproportionately women and racialized workers) are paying the price. Meanwhile the rich are churning out profits. See more

Crucial update from Dr. Zoë Hyde, University of Western Australia: The role children, and consequently schools, play in the COVID-19 pandemic has been hard to work out, but that puzzle is now finally starting to be solved. The latest research shows infections in children frequently go undetected, and that children are just as susceptible as adults to infection. Children likely transmit the virus at a similar rate to adults as well.... While children are thankfully much less likely than adults to get seriously ill, the same isn’t true for the adults that care for them. Evidence suggests schools have been a driver of the second wave in Europe and elsewhere. This means the safety of schools needs an urgent rethink.
We need to start hearing from government what supports they will provide for families ( and everybody!), to make lockdowns and school closures or pivots to full remote learning doable, like: emergency income supports, job protections and ensuring tech access for all students.
Rest In Power to this (yet unnamed) Child and Youth Worker , our condolences to family and the school community.
In an effort to demand that the provincial government and school boards take real and concrete action to tackle anti-Black and anti-Indigenous racism in Ontario... schools, the TYC, along with 17 other provincial stakeholders have issued this joint statement. We are respectfully giving Education Minister @slecce 5 business days (1 week from today) to respond to this statement. You can also check out the statement on our website in the link in our bio.
Tune in tomorrow, 11 am!
