Parkinson's Resource Centre 18.06.2021

Today, on Sunday, April 11, World Parkinson's Day 2021, take a moment to think about and share with others in your life what #Parkinsons and #ParkinsonsAwarenessMonth mean to you. Whether it's the impact of a diagnosis, the need for research, what it's like to live with a wide array of ever-changing symptoms, the importance of participating in programs and services that help individuals and families live well with Parkinson's disease - think about what Parkinson's disease me...ans to you. Then take a moment to share your thoughts with others, whether it's family members, friends, co-workers, or those you encounter who may not be familiar with Parkinson's disease. Help raise awareness and increase understanding to improve the lives of all those affected by Parkinson's. <3 "It begins with an appetite to discover my self-respect. To redeem the day. So the day does not go down in debt. It begins with that kind of appetite." (Leonard Cohen, 1992) Artist: Karin Åkesdotter

"In 2008, NBA star Brian Grant was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease. Ever since, Grant has used his money, his influence, and the Brian Grant Foundation to spread awareness, to ease the suffering of those living with the illness, and to work toward finding a cure. In his new autobiography, Rebound: Soaring in the NBA, Battling Parkinson’s, and Finding What Really Matters, Grant shares his experiences of how he’s learned to thrive through healthy habits and the lessons he’s learned from a pro sports career that spanned more than a decade." https://uproxx.com//brian-grant-interview-autobiography-p/

https://theunsteadyhand.org/waynegilbert "Participants in this two-session online Creativity Lab will explore how words can help people with Parkinson’s and their care-partners live better with the diagnosis. Making and sharing simple poems in a supportive community will not diminish symptoms or progression of the disease but will make them more bearable and meaningful. Through creative experiments with words, we can express our anxieties, desires, dreams, anguish, joys and e...ven wonder. In making poems, we can search our suffering for deeper life-affirming possibilitiesand give them a voice. Participants will practice and develop their creative spirits and skills from sample poems, easy writing prompts, and conversation with the facilitator and one another in a supportive zoom community. The Lab will include some writing and reflecting before and after each session and a 10-minute one-on-one consultation with Wayne himself. Wayne A Gilbert was diagnosed with Parkinson’s in 2005. He is a retired teacher of English and Educational Psychology. Wayne has published two chapbooks and produced numerous videos on YouTube. He has performed and facilitated workshops for a variety of Parkinson’s groups, including the Davis Phinney Foundation. In addition, Wayne performs regularly in a variety of venues throughout the Denver Metro area in Colorado, often with improvising musicians. He is also a founder/dancer of Reconnect with Your Body, a Dance for PD affiliated group sponsored by Art as Action Dance Company. Wayne is a beloved IPM Poetry Partner bringing poetry & poem-making for many years to Sterling Maximum Security Prison in Sterling, CO."
