A fascinating look into gangs in Saskatoon. We value and admire the work of STR8 UP: 10,000 Little Steps to Healing, Inc., offering support and a way out. https://thestarphoenix.com//l/explainer-gangs-in-saskatoon

Verse of the day Learn to do good; seek justice, rescue the oppressed, defend the orphan, plead for the widow. - Isaiah 1:17 (NRSV)... Voice of the day No matter how much people have been oppressed or how much they have oppressed others, the part of them made in God’s image is worth rescuing and restoring. - John M. Perkins, Dream with Me: Race, Love, and the Struggle We Must Win Prayer of the day Lord, may we never cease to recognize, affirm, and defend the intrinsic value of each of your children.

To those volunteers who have served with Parkland Restorative Justice in the Person to Person programming: Hello, my name is Kerry Reimer and I am taking over the P2P program that Heather Driedger has been managing for the past 5 years. Many of you have become friends with Heather while she has served in Prince Albert and in the Saskatchewan Penitentiary. In my short time working alongside her, I have discovered that she brings a warm presence to any room she enters and has... done a magnificent job in this position. I will do my best to make this change as smooth as possible. I am really excited to meet each and every one of you. We hope and pray that the restrictions on the institution from Covid 19 will soon lift completely. Sask Penitentiary staff and wardens are doing their very best to get visitation and programs like ours going as soon as possible. I will be in touch to say hi, and to give an update very soon. I was married in 2017 for the first time. We have five children and 7 grandchildren so it has been quite a transition for me, a former long-term bachelor. We live on an acreage just outside of Saskatoon with our cats, dog and a Llama called Salsa. My work has been mostly in a small family business. After coming to faith at the age of 40, I felt led to leave the security of the family business and return to college. I graduated with a degree in Pastoral Leadership at the ripe age of 53. It is never too late to learn and grow. Since then, I have worked in the core areas of Saskatoon with outreach organizations and in the homeless sector in North Battleford. My passion for those who are the most vulnerable in our society comes from my own and my biological family’s struggles with mental health and addictions. I also see from my Christian roots that we are called to be a presence in the places, and with the people that are often rejected by society, and thus are the most vulnerable citizens of our communities. The core concept of P2P revolves around relationships. It is my belief that it is when two people meet, talk and share their lives openly that healing, transformation and hope is born. See more

Two years ago, when riding a Winnipeg city bus, Jonny Meikle was stabbed by Devon Henderson. Today, Jonny is picking Devon up from prison and offering him support and brotherhood.

It is said that no one truly knows a nation until one has been inside its jails. A nation should not be judged by how it treats its highest citizens, but its lowest ones. - Nelson Mandela #prisonersjusticeday

#throwback Thursday Our prison visitation program (P2P) on a busy visit night at the institution in the 1980's. While visits still continued to be suspended due to COVID we look forward to when we can connect inmates again with positive social support.

The month of June is National Indigenous History Month in Canada. As we prepare to celebrate Canada Day tomorrow, let us not forget that we have work to do as a country to dismantle systemic racism that contributes to the over representation of Indigenous Peoples in our prisons.
