Glacier NP alpine conditions

Parks Mountain Safety 08.07.2020

This post is dedicated to a very good boy. Last week, one of Parks Canada’s canine members Cazz passed away in Canmore, Alberta. Cazz became an operationa...l team member in 2011, after completing the RCMP Police Dog Training Course, joining his handler park warden Mike Henderson on duty in Banff National Park. Over the course of his eight years with Parks Canada as a multi-functional national resource, he responded to 450 calls for service spanning six national parks, as well as various external partners such as Alberta Parks, Alberta Fish and Wildlife, and RCMP in both Alberta and BC. To say that Cazz had a full and distinguished career is an understatement. Thank you Cazz, for your service to one and all.

Still snowy in the alpine of Glacier NP! On Monday July 6th, there was 80 cm of snow at the Mount Fidelity snow study plot. The 50-year average for that time of year is 41 cm. Here is a first-hand report from the Parks Canada Visitor Safety team: The (Abbott Ridge) trail is snow covered from 1700m and up. We did hack away at the snow to make the narrow ledge a little safer. The food lockers at Hermit are still under snow, so there is at least 1.5m of snow there. This being ...said, the Hermit trail is nearly snow free to 1900m, patchy snow to 2050m, then snowbound above. Avalanche Crest was snow free to 1650m, then patchy snow to 1850m, then snowbound above. Natural hazards are a part of the national park experience. You can reduce the impact of an unfortunate circumstance by being well informed and well prepared. Parks Canada/C.Gooliaff
