As Ontario residents, we take pride in being one of the world’s leading home and business blue box recycling jurisdictions. We routinely sort, clean and place ...our recyclable materials and place them out for collection as prescribed by recycling agencies. Heck, most of us even wash out our cans, bottles and plastic food trays before doing so. But, what about our cars or trucks when they’ve reached the end of their lifespan? Unfortunately, when it comes to vehicles, it’s an out of sight, out of mind scenario for the vast majority of us not engaged in the automotive repair or disposal industry. As of Sept. 30, 2017, the Ontario government has put in place stringent regulations about how end of life vehicles are handled and disposed of. There are hundreds of us in the industry who handle these vehicles, but relatively few of us who are doing so have taken the prescribed steps to be compliant with the regulations. As just a couple of examples show, the regulations now require that: All vehicles received by an Auto Recycler/Scrap Yard by law MUST BE depolluting the vehicle INSIDE on and Impervious Surface All wastes from vehicles (oil, antifreeze, brake fluid, washer fluid, transmission oil, differential grease, fuel and mercury) all must be removed stored properly and manifested. Over the next few weeks, we will be outlining how Woodbeck Auto Parts is meeting and complying with the new government regulations and why you should ask if the auto recycler - or wrecking yard, as it’s commonly known - you deal with or know of, is working in compliance, as well. It’s a daunting process, but one which will ultimately mean a cleaner, safer industry and environment for future generations. Stay tuned for more on this here.
