We send our condolences to the family of F. Alexander Jackson, long-time Minnedosa lawyer, who passed away on October 1.

With the upcoming changes to the Divorce Act, family law may see the end of the "c" word - "custody". Judges will make parenting orders instead of custody orders. Judges will decide on each parent's decision-making responsibilities and parenting time, instead of using phrases like sole or joint custody, primary care and control, shared custody etc. The new wording is meant to be more neutral and child-focused. The Supreme Court of Canada has expanded a custodial parent's ability to collect retroactive child support. Sometimes a parent required to pay child support has been underpaying for years, usually because they have had increases in income they failed to disclose. When the custodial parent discovers the underpayment, they can ask a Judge to order retroactive support but only if the child is under 18 or in school and still a financial dependent. The Supreme Court of Canada has... now said that's unfair to children and the parent receiving support. The bad news: we will be closed on Friday, August 21. The good news: our flood repairs are almost complete and we will be moving back to our offices at 1040 Princess Ave on Friday. We should be open with business as usual as of Monday morning.

Patersons LLP has been overwhelmed by the support and generosity of our clients, friends, and colleagues while we are working to repair our building and continuing to serve our clients. Today we would like to give a big thank you to Sutton-Harrison Realty for sending us a delicious lunch from Aida’s Catering!

THANK YOU to Oeloff and Christina and everyone at Technology Solve for your help keeping our firm up and running after our flood and during the construction. Dave has been putting in hours moving and setting up our machines in dry places. We've been able to stay open and have most of the staff working seamlessly from home thanks to your excellent service.

In spite of the flood damage to our office at 1040 Princess Ave and on-going repairs, we are still open. Many of us are working from home, but our receptionist and many of the staff are now at our office at 940 Princess Ave. We are still taking calls and scheduling appointments but please continue to bear with us. We want to give a big thank you to our very patient staff who are still getting client work done in spite of the construction chaos and moves. And another big thank you to Scott Phillips at PDQ Carpentry and his crew who are working evenings and weekends to get our office back up and running.
