Lab physicians, Drs. Vilte Barakauskas and Kate Chipperfield, at BC Children's and Women's hospital, alongside patient co-leads are spearheading the P2RISM study (Pregnancy and Pediatric Reference Intervals for Safe Medicine) to help improve care for pregnant women and newborns. Healthcare relies heavily on the lab and reference intervals (RIs) to guide test interpretation and patient management, but did you ever wonder how we know what is normal or abnormal? RIs should repr...esent the intended population and method of testing. However, current RIs for pregnant women and neonates are poorly characterized owing to their quickly changing physiology and difficulty in obtaining blood samples from babies. This study aims to recruit healthy pregnant women and newborns to donate blood samples at 24 hours after delivery (while in hospital with routine tests). These blood samples will be used to calculate normal ranges for several routine blood tests for postpartum mothers and newborns in order to create RIs that clinicians and patients can be confident in. If you, or someone you know is interested in participating, fill out the expression of interest survey and a research team member will be in touch with you as soon as possible. ROBERT F. KALLMAN RADIATION ONCOLOGY AWARD 2018 Reflecting a legacy of excellence in radiation oncology research at BC Cancer, Andrew Minchinton received the 2018 Robert F. Kallman Award for academic leadership, scientific excellence, service to the profession and commitment to colleagues, students and Stanford University. Dr. Minchinton is the second BC Cancer scientist to receive the award after Peggy Olive in 2008 and makes BC Cancer the only institution to have two awarde...es. It's a particularly gratifying award for me because I became friends with Bob Kallman early in my career and he encouraged me to take on some of the more daunting challenges in radiation biology, Minchinton commented. The quantitative assessment of hypoxia and vascular function through novel imaging techniques and the development of 3D tissue models and their use in the development of drugs designed to improve radiation therapy might be the fruit of that encouragement. Kallman’s wife Ingrid and daughter Robyn were present at the award ceremony at Stanford University in California. Following the memorial lecture the award was presented by Stanford Professors J. Martin Brown (Emeritus Prof. Radiation Oncology), Amato Giaccia (Director of Radiation & Cancer Biology) and Quynh-Thu Le (Chair of Radiation Oncology).
