I get a lot of DMs asking how to deal with the grief of losing a beloved dog. So I want to use this post to help others dealing with the pain that comes with t...he loss. The pain in your heart that you feel is the tremendous amount of love you have for your passed loved one. Ask yourself if you would ever trade in that pain for never having loved your dog? I would never trade anything for my time with Smiley. This pain is worth it I told myself. If your dog could ask for one thing ... it would be to let them go when it’s their time. The only way we can repay them for all they gave to us, is to let them go and not let them suffer. Write a letter to your dog - put your feelings on paper. Own your feelings - it’s ok. If you have another dog, show then you are here for them. They don’t want to see you sad. Take them for a long walk and connect with them without saying a word. If you don’t have another dog, consider honouring your passed pup by adopting a dog that needs help. You have too much love in your heart and home to not share it with another dog. And always look back at the life (no matter how long their life was) you gave your dog - be joyous knowing you gave your dog the best life possible. Your feelings are normal. Talk to people that get it and know your pup is up there with Smiley watching over us. Hugs to everyone who is going through this right now. I understand. Xx #grief See more

The loss of Shep is breaking our hearts. We have known this sweet boy for 6 years now and he has walked our beautiful trails almost every day. Colin and I hav...e been actively helping with the search in every possible spare moment we have had. We all so desperately want to find him. It has been our privilege in offering support, parking, a shoulder to lean on, shade, water, pop, coffee, lunches and a washroom for the searchers. Whatever they have needed to help them keep going! Searchers (people, dogs, horses) have worked day and night (using night vision glasses, flashlights and infrared technology). We have welcomed them at any time to continue searching! We were both surprised and disappointed however, when we read a post regarding us here at Thistledown. It stated that we wanted all searchers for Shep to not come on to our property anymore. This was NEVER said, nor was that ever our intention! However, we know exactly how this happened and we need to let everyone who may have read the post to know the *facts*. Apparently, two searchers had asked permission to enter one of our neighbour's property one evening and were given permission to do so. The following evening they returned to the same property but failed to contact the owner. We received a phone call from that neighbour telling us that there were two uninvited people on her property and she asked us if we could investigate to see who they were. We immediately drove to our neighbour's and started looking for the individuals. When they were located they were informed that the property owner was extremely unhappy that they had not asked permission to be on her property that evening. At NO TIME was permission to search on the Thistledown property for Shep ever discussed, nor has it ever been revoked! However, for whatever reason someone took it upon themselves to indicate in a post that searchers were no longer welcome on the Thistledown property. As a result, this message was posted on the Team Chelsea lost pet search group page and we have been receiving numerous negative phone calls, messages and comments since the posting. Amazing how one piece of MISINFORMATION given by one ill-informed person can hurt someone else! We have nothing but praise for all the wonderful people who have spent so much time, energy and LOVE searching for dear Shep through the past two weeks of scorching heat. We ourselves, would do anything to find this sweet boy! *If* he has passed and only his body remains he will be honoured with a cremation full of love and thanks! It breaks our hearts that so many people have gotten the wrong message about Thistledown... We can explain to those who have called, but what about all those people that don't call and may simply judge? We give with all our hearts because this is what pet owners need and it certainly comes from our hearts...They need their beloved pets honoured, handled with the utmost dignity and respect and these beloved pets need to be thanked for all they give us. Please, we want you to know that from the bottom of our hearts, we will encourage and continue to support the searchers looking for our dear old friend Shep for as long as they can. *Those searching may use our property in the search and we will do what we can to support them.* This is a life lesson for all of us - that goes without saying. Remember, you can not control what other people may say about you, but you can correct it the best you can, and then carry on knowing in your heart you are doing the very best you can... We pray every night that our higher power will lead us to our dear Shep. Give your precious pets an extra hug tonight from all of us here at Thistledown. Nancy and Colin
