As our teacher group prepares to gather on the weekend, Marlene Mawhinney's words echo in my mind. Teacher training prepares you to teach. Certification qualifies you to teach. Practice earns you the right, and privilege, to teach. Remember when we could practice together? :-)
Watch this beautiful short video created by Iyengar teacher from the US - BobbyClennell. it features footage of BKS Iyengar practicing and traditional Vedic yan...tras, mandalas, and devotional Indian music. Yantras are sacred geometric patterns used to aid meditation. http://www.bobbyclennell.com/yantra.html See more
Momentous news for Iyengar yoga in Canada. Sending love and huge ocean waves of appreciation to the remarkable community of practice at YCT, led by Marlene. https://www.yogacentretoronto.ca/
Waiting for Abhijata; remembering dear Geetaji.
Some people might consider low ceilings in a temporary home to be a disadvantage. Iyengar yoga people might see it differently!
My low back is rarely cranky, but last night after moving heavy objects up and down many flights of stairs, it did protest. So... I took time for a low back practice, which settled it down completely. In my new temporary home there's a footstool, which I suspect won't see much of my feet, but is perfect for chaturangasana!
Happy Canadian Thanksgiving to All!
Ontario's new restrictions have sent us back to 100% online classes. We've been so impressed with your dedication, dear students, as we learn how to teach more effectively this way. Heaps of gratitude to all of you this Thanksgiving weekend. Here's an interesting interview about the process.
Another post-mortem Post-Mortem: Day 6 I hope everyone learned and is feeling fulfilled. What a work to pull off! Thanks to Laura Tymas, PT, CIYT, for her Ne...urological Diagnoses for Yoga Teachers and Dr. Hermann Traitteur, CIYT, for his lectures on the Sense Organs. Deep gratitude to Steven Burton for tech support. Thanksto all the student subjects who allowed us to practice on them for learning how to help them with their conditions, some quite complicated--and that you all survived! Thanks to the CIYTs who were so eager, enthusiastic and keen to learn. Thanks to my teachers of IYCU, Penny Hanna, Kelly Sobanski, Jerry Chiprin, and Barb Bair who assisted in each team of teachers when teaching student subjects. This was such a wonderful, historical event. Love to everyone! See more
Abhi's smile upon reading the messages of gratitude that poured in on the Zoom chat at the end of the Autumn Sangha. The knowledge blossomed these 5 days, at once bold and subtle.
We've just experienced an astonishing week of Iyengar yoga! Lois Steinberg made the courageous decision to take her annual therapy intensive online this year, because of the pandemic. So many questions arose. How would students create the elaborate, precise prop supports often required in therapy classes? How could hands-on adjustments possibly translate into a virtual format? What would the students do without a teacher present to bring a chair or tuck in a blanket just so?... But Lois's intuition was right. Many participating students told their teams that the week was transformative. Their difficult, often complex conditions improved. Their spirits were lifted. Because they were at home, they had to practice independently with the props and household objects they had there. Some had friends, partners and even children helping arrange supports and make adjustments. And so, the students became more confident in their therapeutic practice, and more likely to continue after the week ended. I expect I wasn't the only one with a lump in my throat as you bid us all farewell Lois. Vast, peaceful ocean waves of gratitude your way. Here's our fantastic team!
The space is fresh, your place marked out and your prop kit ready! We’re looking forward to yoga in person again with some of you, and happy to continue online classes for everyone who’s not prepared to return, just yet.
Lightning Iyengar Yoga. .. Ready to be back at Pathway Yoga Studio to teach live in September.......Are you ready?
For me, preparing to teach is a special kind of sdhan. Thanks dear Wednesday night class for the inspiration.
"I embarked on the practice of asana as a man might set off to sail the world in a craft he could barely handle, clinging to it for dear life... I wanted precisely to chart every coastline, measure the depth of every sea, happen on beautiful unknown islands, and record each perilous reef or tidal current that threatens our navigation of the ocean of life." BKS Iyengar
So many inspired teachers coming to us online during these strangest of days. Shout out to Yoga DNA for making this workshop possible!

Patañjali's Yoga Stra II:32 has been in my mind this past week. "Uncertain knowledge giving rise to violence whether done directly, indirectly, or condoned, is caused by greed, hatred or delusion in mild, moderate or intense degree. It results in endless pain and ignorance. Through introspection comes the end of pain and ignorance." For black and indigenous Canadians, violence and racism are part of daily life. May each of us study this violence and racism to find their sour...ces in our communities and ourselves, so they may be uprooted. May we, through the introspection that comes of dedicated practice, find equanimity in ourselves, so we can act in the world with integrity and courage to help end this pain and ignorance. May we find ways to make our teaching more welcoming and accessible to everyone. Thinking of Jaki Nett who, good-humoured and gracious, taught me a subtle way to find balance in Adho Mukha Vrkshasana in the practice hall at RIMYI one day. Sending love.
