#ThankfulThursday: We would like to recognize Canpotex for their ongoing commitment throughout many years to improving maternal and children’s health care for families who need it. Because of their recent $60,000 donation to Jim Pattison Children’s Hospital Foundation to launch the Canpotex Food for a Day program, they are being recognized as an Honoured Supporter as part of National Philanthropy Day Saskatoon. Congratulations to South Saskatchewan National Philanthropy Day award recipient for Youth in Philanthropy, Gage of #Estevan! Gage is nine years old and has had two heart surgeries. Gage knows first-hand how important it is to help kids like him who spend time in hospital, which is why he became a Miracle Child for the Jim Pattison Children’s Hospital Radiothon this year. Plus, he even launched his own rowing challenge and accumulated metres based on donations! Great job Gage, well deserved!

This past year, our province’s tiniest hearts have been receiving specialized cardiac care at the new pediatric catheterization lab at Jim Pattison Children’s Hospital. The province’s very first dedicated pediatric cardiac catheterization lab is located on the ground floor of the children’s hospital. A specialized team of professionals works with the pediatric cardiologist to perform cardiac catheterizations, which is a procedure used to examine heart problems, as well as tre...at heart conditions. A first of its kind space in Canada designed specifically for kids has made a big impact in its first year at Jim Pattison Children’s Hospital. The Child Life Zone, located on the main floor, is a space to offer support and education for young patients and their families to help reduce stress and anxiety associated with hospital stays, tests, and procedures. Reflecting back on the first full year of operations at Jim Pattison Children’s Hospital, there is one space in particular that has brought an added sense of calmness and ease to children requiring an overnight stay. The pediatric sleep lab is the first of its kind in #Saskatchewan and has saved many families hours of travel in order to get the care they need for their child. One #Saskatoon family describes the new lab as a lifesaver now that they can stay closer to home for treatment for their nine-year-old son, Madden, who was born with congenital central hypoventilation syndrome (CCHS) and Hirschsprung’s Disease. #Saskatoon parents Sarah and Cory were ecstatic when they found out they were expecting baby Willow, but that excitement quickly turned to panic when Sarah went into labour 14 weeks earlier than expected. That’s when Willow entered the world on Sept. 2, 2019, weighing only one pound 14 ounces. She was rushed to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), where she was hooked up to machines that barely fit her tiny body. It’s been an incredible year for maternal and pediatric health care in #Saskatchewan. On this day one year ago, Jim Pattison Children’s Hospital became fully operational, welcoming 112 maternal and pediatric patients to their new patient rooms. A new bus will soon be helping provide better access to dental and mental health services for Indigenous children and youth in #Saskatchewan. A $3.3 million project launched by Synergy 8 will fund a bus to travel to the seven First Nations communities of the Saskatoon Tribal Council five days a week. Meet another Miracle Story for the Jim Pattison Children's Hospital Radiothon, 2020 Champion Child Torrie of #Balcarres! Torrie was diagnosed with a rare blood disease at just nine years old. The perfect treatment for Torrie’s rare, serious blood disease was a special piece of equipment, which was thankfully purchased just six months before her diagnosis with funding from Jim Pattison Children’s Hospital Foundation. Torrie was the very first child in Saskatchewan to be treate...d with the new Pheresis machine. Without access to this life-saving equipment, children just like Torrie would have to travel out of province for treatment. Fourteen-year-old Madeline loves hanging out with friends, listening to music and is enjoying being a high school sophomore. However, there was a time when the pressures of social life and the stress of school led her to her breaking point. In January 2020, Madeline attempted suicide and had to be rushed to the emergency room. Her family hopes that sharing her story will continue the conversation around mental health to help end the stigma.
