March 6 Singing Tip: Piano and Voice exercise. Don't worry if you don't play the piano. It's easy. Find a piano that is in tune! Or use a keyboard, or find a keyboard app online. 1. Find a comfortably low note on the piano that you can sing. Not crazy low. If you are dipping your chin to try to get a low note, you need to come up to a higher note. Choose a note that is one or two notes above your lowest note as a good starting place.... 2. Using your pointer finger (if you've never played piano before), find your comfortable starting note and move up the piano, to your right, playing every note (whether black or white), one at time. Sing, "Muh" as in the word "Mum". Stop before your throat feels uncomfortable. Mark on a sheet of paper where you stopped. 3. Start over again, beginning with the exact same starting note. This time as you play, make an sss, sss, sss sss, sound. Make the sss sounds short and crisp with energy!! Make that sound as you play all of the same piano notes again. It's like hissing with a very very very very relaxed tongue. You'll feel your pelvic floor. To be sure you know what I mean by pelvic floor, find your hip bones and then move an inch inwards and make a strong sss sound again. Did you feel something move down there? That's what I mean by your pelvic floor. You'll feel those muscles, the psoas muscles. Keep noticing them work as you make the short quick sss sounds. Here's a link to see Psoas muscles: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Psoas_major_muscle 4. Repeat No. 2 using the "Muh" sound and use the energy from your pelvic floor that you JUST DISCOVERED when you made the crisp, short, ssss sound in Exercise No. 3. Again, play the same notes again, working your way up the piano semitone by semitone, the smallest interval on the piano, playing every single note as you go higher and higher. Could you go higher this time? 5. Remember if you feel your throat getting tight, think of the beginning of the yawn. That opens your throat. Notice I didn't ask you to actually yawn. An actual yawn is not going to create a nice sound. If you feel like you want to shy away from a note, that is often the sign that the throat is starting to close and the swallowing muscles are taking over, causing the larynx to rise. When the larynx rises the throat feels uncomfortable. Try thinking down when you sing. This will help remind you to use your pelvic floor when you sing. 6. Keep the fun in it! Remember when people are having fun they laugh and the voice often sails super high naturally. Have fun! I am running a weekend special one more time! 52% off if you're interested, till Sunday March 9, 2014. $126 for Three 45-minute voice lessons! Good fun! See link below! TO YOUR SUCCESS!! March 5 Singing Tip: This one is for Operatic Sopranos and Operatic Tenors. Observe Breathing and Watch Head Level. Think of the idea of the chin meeting the chest, without the chin going too low. If it does, the sound will be throaty. A great soprano named Edith Wiens, made me aware of my chin going too low back in 2002. Renata Tebaldi taught that technique to Aprile Millo who sang with all the greats, including Pavarotti. Just be sure nothing goes too low or too hi...gh when it comes to the chin and you'll be fine. Record and listen to your sound. Test it out for yourself, so you can be sure. That is a sure way to know if you are doing it right! SOPRANO EXAMPLE- Observe Breathing and Head Position Watch Aprile Millo. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W51YwFGUXNE Sometimes she's strictly a nose breather, other times she 's mouth breathing. A lot of great singers suggest breathing through the nose if you have time (it 's slower). Others suggest mouth breathing (it 's faster). Others suggest mouth and nose breathing at same time. Sometimes when Pav nose breathes, his nostrils flare. Interesting. Watch every detail you can from the master singers. I do as Pav, nose breathe when I have time, so I feel the air move through the nasal passages to guarantee the CHIARO. When I need to allow the air to go in fast, I like to do mouth and nose breathing at the same time. I allow it. TENOR EXAMPLE - Observe Translation and talk about the chest. Link that instruction to "chest meeting chin". http://www.youtube.com/watch Here's Nicolai Gedda describing breathing when the volume of the chest increases while the tuck happens. Have a look at this video. Nicolai Gedda was one of the greatest lyric operatic tenors of the last century. Listen to what he has to say about the lower abs, tucking in, lifting the chest and yawning and prepping with space, the mf dynamic level, the jaw, the gradual opening. It 's all there. The best teaching out there is what the great singers actually did. Perhaps write out the tips you hear Nicolai Gedda teaching. Have fun! See other posting today! TO YOUR SUCCESS!!
