BE PREPARED....THERE WILL BE FIREWORKS THIS MAY 24 WEEKEND MANY ANIMALS ARE TERRIFIED OF FIREWORKS AND WILL BOLT RUNNING BLINDLY INTO DANGER OR GETTING LOST....

PAWS 31.05.2021

*** PLEASE - PLEASE - PLEASE *** Go safely in your travels this weekend. It is the 'Victoria Day' long weekend here in Canada. In spite of 'lock downs' I am s...ure many will be on our roads / highways for one reason or another. We share our world with many people and animals (wild / domestic / birds etc.). They too deserve to arrive safely at their destinations. Thank you for slowing down, staying alert, driving sober / without distraction and for pulling over to help as necessary. PAWS Volunteers are always prepared with the numbers of reputable wildlife rehabbers in our fully charged cell phones and we keep equipment in our vehicles in the event of an emergency rescue (medium / large pet crate, towels, a shovel (to gently assist grumpy snapping turtles), dog leash etc. THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR CARING!!!

Hello ... Grouchy Pants here - aka Heidi :-) Lovin' this new cat bed!... (Yes ... she IS in search of her loving, forever home ... and YES she has cattitude!) Beautiful Heidi is a fairly petite girl who is under 2 years of age, spayed of course, in excellent health and she would prefer to be the only kitty in the household. No young children please ... (she is actually very loving ... she was mistreated in her former 'home').

FACTS OF THE DAY .... Cucumbers... I didn't know this... and to think all these years I've only been making salads with the cucumbers... 1. Cucumbers contai...n most of the vitamins you need every day, just one cucumber contains Vitamin B1, Vitamin B2, Vitamin B3, Vitamin B5, Vitamin B6, Folic Acid, Vitamin C, Calcium, Iron, Magnesium, Phosphorus, Potassium and Zinc. 2. Feeling tired in the afternoon, put down the caffeinated soda and pick up a cucumber. Cucumbers are a good source of B vitamins and Carbohydrates that can provide that quick pick-me-up that can last for hours. 3. Tired of your bathroom mirror fogging up after a shower? Try rubbing a cucumber slice along the mirror, it will eliminate the fog and provide a soothing, spa-like fragrance. 4. Are grubs and slugs ruining your planting beds? Place a few slices in a small pie tin and your garden will be free of pests all season long. The chemicals in the cucumber react with the aluminum to give off a scent undetectable to humans but drive garden pests crazy and make them flee the area. 5. Looking for a fast and easy way to remove cellulite before going out or to the pool? Try rubbing a slice or two of cucumbers along your problem area for a few minutes, the phytochemicals in the cucumber cause the collagen in your skin to tighten, firming up the outer layer and reducing the visibility of cellulite. Works great on wrinkles too!!! 6. Want to avoid a hangover or terrible headache? Eat a few cucumber slices before going to bed and wake up refreshed and headache free. Cucumbers contain enough sugar, B vitamins and electrolytes to replenish essential nutrients the body lost, keeping everything in equilibrium, avoiding both a hangover and headache!! 7. Looking to fight off that afternoon or evening snacking binge? Cucumbers have been used for centuries and often used by European trappers, traders and explores for quick meals to thwart off starvation. 8. Have an important meeting or job interview and you realize that you don't have enough time to polish your shoes? Rub a freshly cut cucumber over the shoe, its chemicals will provide a quick and durable shine that not only looks great but also repels water. 9. Out of WD 40 and need to fix a squeaky hinge? Take a cucumber slice and rub it along the problematic hinge, and voila, the squeak is gone! 10. Stressed out and don't have time for massage, facial or visit to the spa? Cut up an entire cucumber and place it in a boiling pot of water, the chemicals and nutrients from the cucumber will react with the boiling water and be released in the steam, creating a soothing, relaxing aroma that has been shown the reduce stress in new mothers and college students during final exams. 11. Just finish a business lunch and realize you don't have gum or mints? Take a slice of cucumber and press it to the roof of your mouth with your tongue for 30 seconds to eliminate bad breath, the phytochemicals will kill the bacteria in your mouth responsible for causing bad breath. 12. Looking for a 'green' way to clean your taps, sinks or stainless steel? Take a slice of cucumber and rub it on the surface you want to clean, not only will it remove years of tarnish and bring back the shine, but is won't leave streaks and won't harm you fingers or fingernails while you clean. 13. Using a pen and made a mistake? Take the outside of the cucumber and slowly use it to erase the pen writing, also works great on crayons and markers that the kids have used to decorate the walls!! Pass this along to everybody you know who is looking for better and safer ways to solve life's everyday problems.

PLEASE HELP I am assisting a woman in Manitoba with a beautiful Saint Bernard. DOES ANYONE KNOW ANYONE in Manitoba or Ontario who would accept him into their rescue?

PAWS 18.01.2021

I know I am going to offend people with this post, but actually, I don't care. Rescue Centres get hundreds of calls a month. I see them here on facebook, I get ...them on messenger and email and they all sound pretty much the same: "There's a stray cat that showed up at my house (or there's this cat that is hanging around my house), and he's hungry and it's so cold, but I can't bring him/her in the house because I have cats (or dogs). This is crap. EVERYBODY has a bathroom with a door they can close. Some people have an extra bedroom, with GASP! a door that can be closed. In the kind of weather we are having, these people seriously can't help out a cat for a few nights? Ok, your cats will know and be upset. So? It may be life or death for the cat outside. You will be inconvenienced a little. Big deal. You'll get over it. Who do people think rescues are? Magicians? They can't put the cat in their house for a couple of nights until a rescue makes room? and yet when you tell them you have x number of cats in your house, they're like, "Well, one more won't matter." Really? Then you take the "one more." I see this all the time, I hear it all the time, and then if and when a rescue takes the cat, what does the person do? Pat themselves on the back that "they" rescued a cat. No, they didn't. They dumped the problem on someone else. People, step up. On these freezing nights, open your home temporarily and your heart permanently. It won't kill you to be inconvenienced for a few days. It might save a life - Rescue Centres cant do it alone. Stop whining and step up to the plate. Please feel free to share. Tammy

Today we remember Rob Stewart: shark activist, biologist, author and the filmmaker behind Sharkwater, Revolution and Sharkwater Extinction on the anniversary of... his death. I think everyone changes the world. It’s just how much, how big, and in what direction. And the more people become educated, the more they change the world in a positive direction. And, 7 Billion people have a massive amount of power to change the world. Rob Stewart Since Sharkwater released, more than 100 countries have banned shark finning and 41 countries have banned shark finning, fishing or the shark fin trade entirely. Shark highlights for 202026 tonnes of shark fins were seized in Hong Kong. U.S. law enforcement seized 6 tons of shark fins and shut down a decade long shark smuggling ring. Hawaii levied the highest fine for shark fin smuggling: $126,000 in fines, forfeiture of the vessel valued at $119,000 and seizure of $58,000 of fins. Since Sharkwater and Rob’s death, Marine Protected Areas have increased by more than 23 million square kilometers. Hotels, airlines, shipping companies have banned shark fins. Even China and Hong Kong have banned the soup at state functions. But, there’s more work to do; 150 Million sharks are still dying from finning each year. Shark populations have already dropped by more than 90% and these beautiful animals need our help before they become extinct. Ocean acidification thru Climate change is our biggest challenge. As Rob said, Don’t feel disillusioned! The challenge is calling the best in us. Please share Rob’s message, and let your friends know they can watch Sharkwater Extinction, available free worldwide on Amazon Prime and on Crave in Canada. https://www.amazon.com/Sharkwater-Extinction-//B07QSYPPVY/ https://www.crave.ca/en/tv-shows/sharkwater-extinction Rob’s work continues across the world through the organization he created; United Conservationists with their Fin Free and Shark Free movements and the Rob Stewart Sharkwater Foundation. Raccoons are often misunderstood and perceived as vermin by those who do not appreciate that every species, every life, plays its own personal role in our ecosy...stem. This perception can be changed. It can be changed by conscientious humans just like yourself. A human cannot truly appreciate something that isn't understood so let's CHANGE THAT! Share with the world what raccoons really are. Raccoons are: - Intelligent. Some studies have shown raccoons to have a cognitive ability similar to that of some higher primates. - Adaptive. Raccoons are versatile animals that can flourish in a woodland setting or among urbanites with equal success. - Sensitive. The raccoon's paw(or hand) is full of tiny receptors that make his sense of touch a super power. When wet, these receptors become even more sensitive allowing a raccoon to "see" items just by feeling them! - Good mothers. Infant raccoons are born blind and completely helpless. Mother raccoons choose a safe home to raise their families and have even been known to brave fire or other dangers, risking their own lives, to make sure the family stays safe. Raccoon cubs stay with their mother and siblings for one year before making lives of their own. - Beautiful. With a ringed tail and dark mask the raccoon is easily of of the most unique AND recognizable species in North America. Raccoons are all of these things and so much more. What are raccoons to you?

Hello Friends: I hope you will take a few minutes to read this PAWS update which I had intended to post sooner. This past week has seen MANY emergencies with animals and humans alike.... PLEASE HELP ... I am on my way to pick up our boy Floppy from emerg in Barrie this afternoon ... let's hope he does WELL and that the radiologist and our main vet were right in that this is a case of pneumonia and not cancer. His bill is going to be astronomical ... (but we do not make decisions based on $$$ here at PAWS ... we do what is best for the ANIMALS - always). Thank you for your continued support and for caring about the innocent beings who are so deserving.

I posted this for an adopter as an example I did not personally adopt her. Please share! This is why you don't give away cats or dogs free o copied this from an... adopter: This is my baby girl named Tru. She was used as live bait in illegal dog fighting when she was about 5 months old. She was given away for free on FB and the people who took her were monsters. She suffered many injuries some of which had long lasting effects. Her lower jaw was broken along with some teeth. Fracture to the skull right in the middle of her forehead. The swelling from it was causing seizures and she has permanent mild brain damage from it. Her eye lid was ripped clear off of her face and her eye was left 95% damaged so we had no choice but to have it removed. She also had a broken hip that has healed mis or mal aligned so she has pain in the rear if she is up and running too much or if pressed on it. But she is my sweet purrfect little angel. She's the most wonderful cat. Caring for her and making sure she has the proper care for everything from beginning to now has taught me so much about special needs kitties and If I had a big house I would rescue all special needs cats. From Pantheras Puma Project: By now many of you may have seen the viral video of a trail runner's encounter with a mother mountain lion in Utah. If you ...haven't, we've put the link below. Dramatic headlines like "Mountain Lion Stalks Man" and this person's own video title "Cougar Attack in Utah Mountain Lion Stalks Me For Six Minutes" can be very misleading. This was obviously an intense and scary encounter, and we would have been pretty terrified by such an interaction (to say the least). However, context is important. If you watch the video, you can see at least two "cubs" or "kittens" before momma comes towards the runner. This is a case of a mother doing what most mothers do: defending her young. She was trying to get the man to leave the area. Stalking behavior is very different; if the man were seen as prey, the lion would probably have stayed stealthily out of sight and directly attacked, likely leading to a much different outcome. Dramatic headlines do nothing to help us coexist with our human neighbors. As our friend Beth Pratt, mountain lion advocate and Regional Executive Director at the @National Wildlife Federation in California says: "We should have a healthy respect for mountain lions, but not demonize them- they are not waiting in the woods ready to pounce on us at any moment. For the most part, they want to avoid us." Anytime we enter habitat shared with large predators it's important to know what they mean by their actions. Overt, but more often subtle ways of communicating telegraph their intent and consequently, how we should reciprocate with our behavior. The very fact that we don't see the grizzly bear that is in our neighborhood right now, or never find the lion's kill near our normal walking routes until well after it's left, is by design. These creatures and so many others are profoundly scared of US. WE are most threatening species on earth and every top carnivore shies from our company whether we are playing the role of the hunter or not. #endthewaronwildlife #endwildlifekillingcontests

Once in a while, I find myself viewing this video which was created by a former PAWS Volunteer who gave such a great hand while she was on board here at PAWS. I find myself smiling with tears in my eyes as I watch as ... I don't think ANY of the animals in this video are still with us ... other than in my heart. We have 3 cats remaining here in Huntsville who relocated north from Toronto on July 31, 2007 ... Homer, Mingo and Pumpkin. They are seniors now of course and all t...hree are doing a-ok right now, thankfully. People very often ask how the animals get along here at PAWS ... We have our answer ;-) This is Herbie (L) and either Smokey or Bandit ... I have trouble disti...nguishing between the two (identical twins)! Lol 'Feral' kitties who call PAWS their home (at least for now) ... rescued in the early stages of the 'pandemic' a few months back (from Kearney, ON) by our Foster Mom Extraordinaire, Lisa. All 4 (includes a precious silver tabby fella 'Shadow') were spayed / neutered in spite of the restrictions thanks to Noella Slater (and her compassionate vets) who also always steps up to the plate to be of assistance to one and all ;-) TEAM WORK my friends ... And today these beautiful beings are safe and loved! (And are they ever enjoyable to watch! At times I am outside with Karma and Justice in the evening, these frisky felines are not aware that I am watching ... all 4 are inseparable). Ferals or FRADIES as I have always called them tend to be my favorites ... I wish more people would give them a chance by welcoming them into their hearts and homes. They may not be in your lap everyday but they are just as deserving as any other cat in need and when they DO learn to trust, it is one of the most rewarding feelings :-) Thanks to one and all who supports our life-saving work ... xo
