This is Otis the pug. He does not like his crate and would not go into his kennel on his own. He would then bark and whine during kennel time. The owners were making a very common mistake most dog owners make, by placing Otis in his crate when he’s bad. Dogs relate this punishment of being in their crate as a negative space. They bark and whine for our attention. Owners don’t understand that they reinforce this behavior by telling them quiet, or going up to the crate. Reme...mber all dogs do bad stuff. As trainers it’s our job to not focus on the bad stuff but by teaching the animal what to do instead to create a more desirable behaviour. If you have used these methods before, don’t worry you are not alone. Crate training still impresses me how fast an animal can learn. Otis here had two 5min sessions on shaping small behaviors leading up to Otis going into his crate on his own. We then added a cue when he was predictably going into his crate on his own. So proud of this little man. Next we will work on slowly increasing the amount of time he will stay in the kennel. #cratetraining #fearfreepet #fearfree #clickertraining #pugs #positivereinforcement

Great day to be practicing recall with little Miss. Kirby. Her wonderful owners have done a great job on working with her recall inside. Today we were ready to take it outside while following the new Covid restrictions. #recall #puppystartright #fearfreepets #clickertraining #positivereinforcement #karenpryor
