It's not too late to sign up for our Rally Obedience class tomorrow! When most people think of dog sports, the ones that come to mind are usually Agility, Flyball, Dock Diving, and Schutzhund. All are wonderful, fun, sports, but require skills that are often unneeded in a pet home. Rally O, or Rally Obedience, is just the opposite. It uses everyday commands and Obedience cues from beginner to advanced, in fun and interactive ways.... And unlike the other sports (with exception to the Obedience portion of Shutzhund) you and your dog work directly in tandem with one another. A true team! Rally is great for not only practising known and new Obedience skills in fun ways, but it is also a great way to bond with your dog! It's open to all breeds and all people, regardless of ability. It's also one of the few sports that can accommodate those in wheelchairs or other mobility devices. It's a fun sport that is only timed in the event that there's a tie, otherwise time doesn't matter over much! It focuses on the bond with handler and dog, and how you work together as a team. This handsome guy was born deaf which was creating some communication challenges between him and his owner when he was looking away from her, so Stephanie is using one of her favorite tools to help them out! E-collars, whose ancestors were referred to as shock collars, were developed in the 1950’s as a way to deliver high level corrections for things like chasing deer or other potentially dangerous behaviors. Their orig...inal use was intended to be solely punitive and they didn’t have a lot of options or a wide range of stimulation levels, earning them the negative reputation that they still have today. Luckily for everyone, technological advances have turned things around and have given us a new tool that appears the same at first glance but is actually much, much different. Enter the modern E-collar. Despite the fact that many people still like to compare them to the shock collars of before, today’s remote collars are much different. They are highly adjustable with stimulation ranges of from 1 to over 100 and they are being used more and more for low level for communication rather than being a strictly corrective tool. Used properly, a remote training collar creates a bridge allowing you to better communicate with your dog. When your dog has clear and consistent communication from you, it takes far less time to train them. Stark’s inability to hear creates a perfect example for how an e-collar can be used for communication rather than punishment. We use the e collar to get his attention and use sign language from there! Your dog doesn't have to be deaf to benefit from e-collar training!
