Congratulations to my Group Class tonight on graduating Basic Obedience! I am beyond thrilled on how far each of you have thrived! Some of our local vets have said they have seen many cases of dogs that have eaten their owners masks, it could be because it smells like them, or the food they have eaten that day! ... With the new COVID -19 restrictions in place , Group Obedience Classes will be paused for two weeks. We hope to see you Dec 14th, we will reassess the situation before hand and make the appropriate decision to extend the delay or continue on with classes. We want to make sure everyone stays safe. In the mean time any of my current clients are welcome to contact me over the phone with any training questions regarding the current homework they have. Please keep practicing ...your exercises and we will start back where we left off ASAP. So I just wanted to share this as I actually witnessed this happen in my house last night! Two of my dogs were playing like normal, I was thankfully right there watching Tv, I turned around as I heard heavy commotion, I started to yell at the dog’s to settle down and thought one was bitting the other ones neck which was very rare and never happened (they always play soft and it never gets out of hand). I learned quickly that one of my dogs jaw was stuck in the other dog’s ...collar, she began to freak out and started flipping around trying to get out, which was choking the other dog... I quickly jumped up and released the collar in a second, both dog’s were fine, I was sitting only steps away. The collar was still stuck in my dogs mouth and I actually had to pull it off. This was a nylon loose collar. My dogs will no longer have a collar on when playing or left alone. I always took collars off if they where in a kennel but this was a new experience and I had no idea.. I told a friend this afternoon about it and she said this article was floating around FB yesterday, how ironic and scary! I had no idea it’s more common then you think! I am so thankful I was right there. Stay safe! No collars while unattended!

Just a friendly remainder that Deer Season (Bow & Muzzleloader) has began. Make sure to dress (human & dogs) in hunters orange while walking in the woods, be mindful of the trails your using and the time of day. Happy Trails & stay safe!

Fall is in the air

7 week old Enzos owners brought him in after he fell a few feet - he had pale gums and difficulty standing. Traumatic injury from falling is actually not uncom...mon in small dogs...very small dogs will sometimes unexpectedly launch themselves out of arms or off furniture with no regard for their situation or size. Broken limbs, abdominal and head injuries can all occur depending how the dog lands. In Enzos case, the concern was for head injury or internal abdominal bleeding. Both proved negative and after a rest and TLC he fully recovered from his ordeal. All the cuddles and liver treats helped a lot

Is your dog scared of thunder & lightning? Tip: Dont comfort / praise the dog when hes scared, this teaches them that its ok to be nervous. Food over comes fear, try to ignore the dog and give him Kong filled with treats, and turn TV up louder to drain thunder. The dog will feed off of your energy, if you act like nothing is wrong, it will help the dog relax.

I always enjoy walking the baby with the dogs and it makes me sad when I hear others say that they cant do both at once! I am hosting a Group Obedience Training Class in September (if all goes well with COVID-19), we will cover loose leash walking and how to focus with high distractions. This video is me today walking 3 dogs and pushing my stroller (baby) at Point Pleasant Park.

SAY NO TO STICKS!!! So, where to start... I never encouraged Play with sticks for any of my dogs or even my clients dogs. They are sharp, dangerous, give splinters, hard to digest if swallowed etc.. ... Ella (still a puppy) found a stick over the weekend and chewed it up before I had the chance to have her drop it. Yesterday morning I noticed a huge lump on her jaw bone, swelling, light bleeding, infection which caused a lot of pain. I called all over the city to get an appointment and the earliest one was today. They had to sedate her and take a look, she had a small puncture inside the mouth by the back jaw bone. We are assuming the splinter worked its way out but shes on pain meds, antibiotics and anti-inflammatory pills. Her face is still very swollen but should go down over the next few days. I am writing this post because I want to inform everyone how dangerous sticks can be, I am very lucky that Ellas story isnt has horrible as many others. I have seen dogs run with sticks and getting them lodged down throats, getting stabbed in the chest when running with them and they drop it and run over it, swallow sticks and not digest them, get splinters and much more. Please, do your pup a favour and redirect them when they pick a stick up, teach the cue Drop and replace with a toy/ball etc.

We sure are enjoying the summer/mat leave days.. but I still dont miss a walk (personal use only at the moment) Looking forward to seeing you guys soon.

Everyday she finds the mud

Its going to be another beauty of a June day! For some dogs that means really getting out there and enjoying the warm sunshine. But many of our furry friends n...eed a bit of extra care when the temperature starts to rise. Brachycephalic dogs - dogs with smushed in faces- have to work harder than others to regulate their body temperature. This means they can overheat much faster - sometimes in just minutes. If you share your life with a brachycephalic dog you must always be aware of what they can and cannot handle. Limit all exercise and exertion to the cool parts of the day - that includes playing around the yard or other minor activity. Make sure cool water, shade and access to lower temperatures are available at all times. Some dogs may need the added benefits of a cooling fan on hot days - if Fido looks hot, then hes hot. Cool him down. Always seek veterinary advice if you suspect overheating or heat stroke. Know your pet, know the weather and have a plan. Just like the old adage says...an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure!

UPDATE Hello Everyone, I just wanted to send a little update to all of my clients. I am still on mat leave and will be off until further notice, I am estimating the Fall 2020. ... With COVID 19 and having a new baby I do not feel comfortable starting back just yet and visiting multiple houses a day and working with the public. I also am on a waiting list for childcare. Once everything is in place I will send out messages to keep everyone informed. Group classes have also been postponed until further noticed. The Community Center I rent out is closed and most likely will not be operating until the public schools are back in place. I will contact everyone on my list ASAP when I can get a start date for this. I am hoping Sept. I apologize for the delay upon my return and I appreciate everyones patients.
