Tomorrow's the last day to cast your vote for Calgary Votes Pet Training. Off on the Right Paw would sure appreciate your stamp of approval Calgary Votes Link: https://calgary.communityvotes.com//pet-and-/pet-training Meanwhile, thought everyone would enjoy the sight of one very relaxed tween lab....Chili chillaxin' even the day after Friday afternoon Nose Work Games. Hope his classmate Joey enjoyed a relaxing Saturday too <3 There's still room in this 6 week group ...class if you and your dog would like to join (I can catch you up on the class missed yesterday). Thank you to his Mom for sending this photo of sweet Chili all tuckered from tripe search & rescue - it put a big smile on my face!!!
Haha - YEPPERS!!! And I will never be converted from being a lab girl
For those of you out there with puppies just getting used to our world, or with dogs that struggle with anxiety or over-arousal in certain environments, I really enjoyed this Podcast with trainer and certified behavior consultant Leslie McDevitt (author of the Controlled Unleashed series). Leslie coined the Pattern Game "Look at That" (LAT), akin to Look and Look Away and Engage/Disengage, but a cued way of soliciting the behavior from your dog. I introduce this game in puppy... privates, puppy classes as well as reactive privates. She recently coined a new pattern game called LATTE (or Look at That, Then Enrichment) akin to saying "LAT" then "Find it" (or "Go Snuffle"), allowing a dog more time to just be a dog and decompress in that environment in between LAT repetitions. Wonderful idea of setting up a various enrichment stations (snuffle mats, licky mats, boxes to hide things in) all in the circle in a training area, setting up the LATTE pattern game first, then use the learned LATTE pattern game in that environment, gradually introducing your distractions or triggers you want to counter-condition your dog to so they feel better or calmer about them (and thus, can then focus more on work with you). Moreover, nothing wrong with setting up some DECAF (doing LATTE without the LAT portion and just the enrichment). These pattern games are great for all ages, from puppies to adolescents, to adults, whether you want them to acclimate to an environment, feel less concerned about certain things, or less aroused about triggers. Hope you enjoy it as well. :) If you're unfamiliar with LAT, or engage/disengage, or look and look away, have a new puppy, teen or an adult dog, message the page to inquire about the service that will fit your needs.. I'll frequently remind clients THIS ability to accept various things (and not be anxious, worried or want to go to absolutely everything) in the environment is THE MOST IMPORTANT behavior for them to learn. And they all need to learn it, or they'll make their own mind up how to react without guidance (and you might not care for that reaction). Happy New Year Folks!!! While 2022 has started off in a rather blustery way, the weather should be getting back to a more civil winter starting this Sunday. A fresh new round of Intro NOSE WORK GAMES (group class) is being scheduled to start Friday Jan 14th, 1:30 PM. This is a great form of enrichment for all ages. No prerequisite training is needed. Your puppy or dog should be comfortable outdoors, in the social presence of other teams, and will be "benching" in between turns, so this also presents an opportunity to practice the impulse control skills for "waiting one's turn" (when you really want your turn!) in an ex-pen. Give the page a message if you're interested in getting your Doggie's Detective hat on.
***INTRODUCING NEW ANIMALS*** Oh Calgary - you are one freezing place right now!!! Just because you're hiding out indoors, doesn't mean you can't learn new things. Might as well do an "Educational Post" Monday. I often get clients that are introducing a new puppy to the home with resident adult dogs. So how should introductions go for everyone's comfort and success? If you've come out here for a puppy play assessment with Cairo (or Cai and Max) or even for puppy play-time, t...Continue reading
Welcome to Puppy Start Right Privates Ms. Pepper :D This labbie girl reminds me very much of my Cairo (and apparently Pepper's Momma looks just like Cai). Pepper has attended Orientation, two puppy play-times and came and conquered her Health and Handling session. She loved the snuffle mat I had out for demo last week, so this time the Auntie Edna's Snufflers Classic mat just perfect for her to take home was in the Puppy Palace for an off-switch during her training session. Her snuffle mat came in very handy during puppy play today too while she was waiting her turn in her ex-pen to meet new friends. Pepper's thoroughly making the most of all that puppyhood has to offer. <3
Welcome to Puppy Start Right Privates Ms. Nova :D Labbie x Coonhound Nova fell instantly in love with the snuffle mat I had out for demo enrichment during her Orientation, so she selected this beautiful black & white with a splash of red Auntie Edna's Snufflers Classic Mat to take home with her. Nova enjoyed meeting Mistress Cairo for her play assessment afterwards, and we hope to see Ms. Nova next week at puppy play-time when her folks have less adulting to do (we missed you today Nova! <3 ).
Let's take a moment to admire Ms. Coco's bilateral prowess at offering a head tilt in both directions during a down/stay in Home décor. I'm pretty sure she was wondering "What crazy noise are you making under that mask, Pam?"
Corgi puppy Rudy is growing into his ears :D While he was thoroughly entertained with all the props in his Obstacles & Sounds session in Puppy Start Right, I think his favorite part was at the end when Mom chose the Hunter's Camo Classic snuffle mat from Auntie Edna's Snufflers for him to enjoy.
Life's a Cabaret My Friend ;) Can your puppy do this? Puppy Marley doing a fabulous job in the Costume Recall Change of her Costumes, Appearances & Household Tools session in Puppy Start Right Privates <3 Applause to Dad for his "all that jazz" costume selection :D
In Targetpalooza group class Sunday afternoon, Daisy has been enjoying Intro Rally-O (and is looking forward to Gus' return tomorrow afternoon), while Niko has been doing Targetpalooza-Level 1. Interested in Intro Rally-O or Targetpalooza-Level 1 (trick foundation course using targeting)? Message the page as there will be spots available Sundays 2-3 PM. :)
Awww sweet teens in Clicker Foundations & Manners. Last couple Saturdays, lovely Lucy has been joined by dashing young lads, Baloo and Draco.
More PUPPY SPAM Last couple puppy play-times between Puppy Start Right Privates registrants. I'm busy supervising and explaining social cues and play-signals but I tried to at least snag some photos of everyone waiting their turns in their ex-pens with their peeps.
I'm looking forward to Sunday Brunch Rally-Obedience with these hooligans As opposed to the grassy surface a couple weeks ago....it's now time for Rally-O in the snow!!!

Friday night puppy spam alert Just prior to the change in wifi provider interruption, the utterly adorable Ms. Victoria started in on her Puppy Start Right Privates journey with the Health & Handling module. The ladder surface wins over yet another puppy with it's feel-good charm :D Tory has also met the adult retrievers, conquered her first field trip to Homesense, attended two rounds of puppy play-time, and had a blast in Obstacles & Sounds class (oh and that hotdog challenge - she dropped the hot dog twice on cue ).
HI FOLKS!!! I'm switching to Telus, so I will have only limited internet access until next Friday, Nov 13th. See comments :)HI FOLKS!!! I'm switching to Telus, so I will have only limited internet access until next Friday, Nov 13th. See comments :)

The divine Ms. Birdie graduated from Puppy Start Right this afternoon <3 For her grad session she decided to work on settle on a mat, recall games (including recalling against a plate of food!!!) and the Bucket Game for handling so the peeps could enjoy a few costume headbands on her pretty little head. She loved her graduation tug toy and played vigorously with Mom...ultimately in the end getting a bit-o-revenge for the costuming while she was distracted by tastiness LOL :D :D :D
We've been enjoying Max's Dogcation visit with us since the weekend. <3 The Retrievers enjoyed a little "Tea for Two" with Cai's Behemoth Snuffle Mat from Auntie Edna's Snufflers for enrichment this evening. What did your puppy or dog do for mental stimulation and/or enrichment today?
