Pro Bono Students Canada UVic Chapter 11.02.2021

#PBSC UVic is honoured to announce the second annual Chief Justice Richard Wagner Awards in recognition of outstanding student volunteer contributions! Nominations open next month, please stay tuned for more info. #actionforjustice As the 18th Chief Justice of Canada, The Rt. Hon. Richard Wagner is a vocal proponent of closing the justice gap and ensuring all people have the means of exercising their fundamental human right to access the justice system. It is our responsibility to ensure that every person who interacts with a lawyer feels they are treated with humanity, with respect, and with dignity. We are proud to award this honour in his name.

Lawyers who fail to understand the feelings, responses, and behaviours of their clients are more likely to interact inappropriately and unethically within the profession. This heightens the risk of re-traumatization of clients and vicarious traumatization of lawyers and their colleagues. To act ethically, lawyers must practice using a trauma-informed perspective. Trauma-informed practice is ethical practice. Reminder that our Trauma-Informed Practice Workshop with Myrna is happening next Tuesday over zoom! Spots are still available, visit http://pbsc.uviclss.ca/events to register.

Project spotlight! Indigenous Law Research Unit (ILRU) is a dedicated research unit at our school committed to the recovery and renaissance of Indigenous laws. One of the important functions of ILRU is public education. Two of our student volunteers are working with ILRU this year to create a series of creative and engaging plain language resources to enhance public education in Indigenous law and to communicate the type of work ILRU engages in. #pbsc #pbscuvic #indigenouslaw #accesstojustice
